A 41-year-old woman with recurrent urinary tract infections presented with right flank pain, fever, and anorexia. Physical examination revealed right-sided flank pain and a right-sided unilateral renal mass. Computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis revealed xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with perinephric extension. The bear's paw sign was visualized. The classic radiology triad (unilateral large kidney, renal pelvis stone, and a nonfunctioning or poorly functioning kidney) was also found on computed tomographic imaging. She completed a course of antimicrobial therapy and underwent a nephrectomy. Her post-operative course was uneventful and she was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 4.

Microscopic papillae on polar bear paw pads are considered adaptations for increased friction on ice/snow, yet this assertion is based on a single study of one species. The lack of comparative data from species that exploit different habitats renders the ecomorphological associations of papillae unclear. Here, we quantify the surface roughness of the paw pads of four species of bear over five orders of magnitude by calculating their surface roughness power spectral density.

The article describes a new phenomenon in the breeding group of mini-pigs at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG, Novosibirsk): polydactyly (extra digits), which is unusual because the additional digits are situated at the lateral surface of legs or at the lateral and medial ones. This anomaly was f irst found here in 2017 in adult animals intended for culling due to incorrect positioning of the legs caused by f lexor tendon laxity and resulting in weight-bearing on the palmar surface of the proximal phalanges ("bear's paw"). Therefore, the polydactyly of mini-pigs has a pronounced negative selection effect.

Analysis of hair cortisol concentrations (HCCs) is a promising method for monitoring long-term stress in mammals. However, previous measurements of HCCs in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) have yielded highly variable results, which are likely due to different methodological approaches. In this study, hair samples of zoo-housed polar bears were analyzed for cortisol with two independent immunoassays [an enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA) and a chemiluminescence assay (CLIA)] and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
