Large-scale rock burst disasters often occur in high-stress and deep-buried tunnels, due to challenges in accurate forecasting and the lack of clarity regarding the underlying mechanisms largely. This study combined on-site stress drilling tests, coupled finite and discrete element simulations, and theoretical calculations to examine unloading damage, rockburst evolution, and deformation failure of the high-stress and deep-buried Xuefengshan No.1 tunnel.

The concept of "blue carbon" is, in this study, critically evaluated with respect to its definitions, measuring approaches, and time scales. Blue carbon deposited in ocean sediments can only counteract anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions if stored on a long-term basis. The focus here is on the coastal blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), mangrove forests, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows due to their high primary production and large carbon stocks.

Skeletonized human remains from Second World War mass graves in Slovenia are a major challenge in genetic identification, and bones with a high DNA yield must be selected for successful identification. The goal of this study was to construct skeletal sampling strategy recommendations through comparison of the most appropriate groups of skeletal elements. Altogether, 566 bones and teeth from the same mass grave were compared, half analyzed in this study and half in previous studies performed by our group.

Coastal mangrove ecosystems have been shown to be important microplastic (MP) sinks. Yet, information regarding their MP sequestration capacity is scant. Here, we characterized the spatial and vertical distribution of MPs in mangrove ecosystems of the Amazon River delta and quantified, for the first time, their MP burial and potential economic value related to their surface water filtering capacity.
