Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the buffering capacity of glass-ionomer material in vitro. The null hypothesis tested was that there is no effect of cured glass-ionomer pit-and-fissure sealant (PFS) pastes on the environmental acidity as well as the tooth substrate.
Method: For each material, a cured PFS disk and a section of human enamel were simultaneously soaked in lactic acid solution in a conical tube, and the pH of the solution was measured daily for one week. Subsequently, the total amount of calcium leached out in solution was also measured with ICP-AES.
Results: The results showed that the acidity of the solutions changed over time. Significant differences of calcium ion concentration in solution were observed as a result of decalcification. As the PFS products tested did not include calcium, the concentration of calcium ion released indicated acidic erosion of the tooth enamel.
Conclusions: The glass-ionomer countered the acid of the solution rapidly and preserved the structure of human tooth enamel.

Drug repurposing is a promising strategy for managing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in geriatric populations, offering efficient and cost-effective solutions. CVDs are prevalent across all age groups, with a significant increase in prevalence among geriatric populations. The middle-age period (40-65 years) is critical due to factors like obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and psychosocial stress.

Significant progress has been made in cancer therapy with protein-based nanocarriers targeted directly to surface receptors for drug delivery. The nanocarriers are a potentially effective solution for the potential drawbacks of traditional chemotherapy, such as lack of specificity, side effects, and development resistance. Peptides as nanocarriers have been designed based on their biocompatible, biodegradable, and versatile functions to deliver therapeutic agents into cancer cells, reduce systemic toxicity, and maximize therapy efficacy through utilizing targeted ligands such as antibodies, amino acids, vitamins, and other small molecules onto protein-based nanocarriers and thus ensuring that drugs selectively accumulate in the cancer cells instead of healthy organs/drug release at a target site without effects on normal cells, which inherently caused less systemic toxicity/off-target effect.

Previous studies have indicated the great performance of electrooxidation (EO) to mineralize per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water, but different anions presented in wastewater may affect the implementation of EO treatment in field applications. This study invetigated EO treatment of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), two representative perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), using porous Magnéli phase titanium suboxide anodes in electrolyte solutions with different anions present, including NO3-, SO42-, CO32- and PO43-. The experiment results indicate that CO32- enhanced PFAS degradation, while NO3- suppressed the degradation reactions with its concentration higher than 10 mM.

To regulate brain function, peripheral compounds must traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB), an interface between the brain and the circulatory system. To determine whether specific transport mechanisms are relevant for sleep, we conducted a BBB-specific inducible RNAi knockdown (iKD) screen for genes affecting sleep in . We observed reduced sleep with knockdown of solute carrier , a carnitine transporter, as determined by isotope flux.

The synthesis of polyferrocenyldimethylsilane-b-poly(L-glutamic acid) block copolymers was systematically explored. Rod-like and plate-like micelles were prepared from self-assembly of the block copolymers in aqueous solution with two different approaches. In a dissolution-dialysis approach, micelles were prepared by dissolving a block copolymer sample in excess aqueous base followed by the dialysis of the solution against water.
