Introduction: The effects of methylphenidate, a stimulant often prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), on the development of central nervous system oxygen toxicity (COT) have not been experimentally evaluated.

Methods: The records of all pure-oxygen-rebreather divers evaluated at our institution from 1975-2022 were assessed. Cases of COT were defined as a new onset of tinnitus, tunnel vision, myoclonus, headache, nausea, loss of consciousness, or seizures resolving within 15 minutes from breathing normobaric air, and matched 4:1 with similar controls.

Orthostatic Hemifacial Spasm in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

J Neuroophthalmol

June 2024

Department of Clinical Sciences, Florida State University College of Medicine (MMP, RB, CGM), Tallahassee, Florida; Department of Clinical Sciences, Florida State University (GP, BT), Tallahassee, Florida; and Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology (ARC), Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland.

Background: Among the symptoms seen in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), hemifacial spasm (HFS) is rare. Orthostatic-induced HFS preceding lumbar puncture (LP) is previously unreported. We treated two patients with unusual IIH presentations.

Background: Ototoxicity is a side effect of drugs and medications that usually leads to bilateral and symmetric sensorineural hearing loss that commonly affects the high-frequency range initially, with or preceded by tinnitus. Possible ototoxic side effects of calcineurin inhibitor immunosuppressants have been suggested, but this remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate audiological changes in patients undergoing transplantation receiving immunosuppressive treatment with calcineurin inhibitors.

Objectives: The objective assessment tests overcome the variability of subjective methods. Cortical recordings with gap pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex stimulus have been used as objective tinnitus assessments in humans. This study aims to investigate this possible objective tinnitus test and compare gap-induced inhibition in different stimulus parameters and brain regions.

Objective: Patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT) are often referred for digital subtraction angiography (DSA) to exclude cranial dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). Because DSA is not without risk, the authors studied the sensitivity and specificity of an automated detection algorithm that analyses external ear canal sound measurements to evaluate the presence of DAVF in PT patients.

Methods: Between 2015 and 2021, external ear canal sound measurements of 72 PT patients were collected prospectively at our tertiary tinnitus clinic preceding referral of these patients to the neurosurgical department for counseling about DSA.
