Based on a detailed study of the radial distribution function (RDF) of a model for amorphous silicon (a-Si), we address the relation between short-range rearrangements and an increase in medium-range order induced by thermal relaxation. Recent experimental measurements have shown that a small peak appears in the RDF around 4.7 Å upon annealing, along with other subtle changes, and this is attributed to ordering among the dihedral angles. We show that, although this is a possible explanation, an increase in short-range order (up to second neighbors) is not only necessary for these changes to occur, but could also be their sole cause. To clarify the nature of disorder in the amorphous system, correlations among dihedral and tetrahedral angles are examined. The bivariate probability distribution of these two variables reveals small correlations between dihedral and tetrahedral angles, associated with the staggered and eclipsed conformations. In the first case, bond angles around 112.5[Formula: see text] are favored versus 120[Formula: see text] in the second case. Bond angles between 95[Formula: see text] and 100[Formula: see text] are less probable in both conformations.

Background: Loneliness is linked with risk for cognitive decline and dementia among older adults, but the degree to which it predicts future risk is unclear. To investigate if loneliness acts as a predictor of cognitive decline, this study employed a measurement burst design using data from the Einstein Aging Study, where loneliness and cognition were repeatedly assessed daily, for several days, across several years. In this type of data, a major challenge to detecting subtle cognitive changes is the presence of retest/practice effects.

Background: We currently lack in the dementia field accurate, noninvasive, quick, and affordable screening tools for brain dysfunctions associated with early subtle risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Our Kentucky aging cohort demonstrates that asymptomatic older individuals with MCI-like frontal memory-related brainwave patterns convert to MCI within a short 5-year period, as opposed to individuals with NC-like patterns (1) that remain normal 10 years later (2). Astrocyte reactivity influences amyloid-ß effects on tau pathology in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (3).

There is growing recognition of the importance of changes in behavior as an early clinical marker of the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Behavior symptoms may precede the onset of cognitive symptoms by as many as three years. However, these symptoms are often confused for primary psychiatric pathology and there is an urgent need for markers that can help quantify behaviors with the eventual goal of helping distinguish behavior changes related to psychiatric pathology from behavior changes related to the onset of dementia.
