Coal was central to the industrial revolution, but in the 20th century it increasingly was superseded by oil and gas. However, in recent years coal again has become the predominant source of global carbon emissions. We show that this trend of rapidly increasing coal-based emissions is not restricted to a few individual countries such as China. Rather, we are witnessing a global renaissance of coal majorly driven by poor, fast-growing countries that increasingly rely on coal to satisfy their growing energy demand. The low price of coal relative to gas and oil has played an important role in accelerating coal consumption since the end of the 1990s. In this article, we show that in the increasingly integrated global coal market the availability of a domestic coal resource does not have a statistically significant impact on the use of coal and related emissions. These findings have important implications for climate change mitigation: If future economic growth of poor countries is fueled mainly by coal, ambitious mitigation targets very likely will become infeasible. Building new coal power plant capacities will lead to lock-in effects for the next few decades. If that lock-in is to be avoided, international climate policy must find ways to offer viable alternatives to coal for developing countries.

The coal mine workplace environment is a significant factor in inducing occupational health issues, such as intestinal dysfunction in coal miners. However, the mechanism by which the coal mine workplace environment induces intestinal dysfunction is still unclear. Therefore, we applied the Coal Mine Workplace Environment Biological Simulation (CEBS) model which was previously constructed to detect the intestinal pathological manifestations and changes in the gut microbiota of mice from the perspectives of intestinal function, tissue morphology, and cell molecules.

Arsenic (As) is a common toxic pollution element. The microorganism-mediated transformation of arsenic forms is an important part in the biogeochemical cycle of As. In the various microbial metabolic processes involving As, the coupling reduction of As has a great impact on the environment and is a process that is easily overlooked.

Hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) is used to increase the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of food waste (FW). The formation of melanoidins will seriously affect the microbial activity and methane production during anaerobic digestion (AD). Based on spectroscopic methods, similarities and heterogeneity of melanoidins from different sources were investigated, and the wide peak band (260-350 nm) in the ultraviolet region and the differences of amide groups of fructose-amino acid system, fructose-casein system and FW system were revealed.

In this study, the hierarchical porous materials for adsorbing mycotoxins were prepared by one-step carbonization-activation method using potassium permanganate (KMnO) and chitin as activators and carbon source, respectively. The hierarchical porous materials had different specific surface area and pore distribution owing to different carbonization temperatures. In this paper, the effects of pH, time and temperature of adsorption as well as the concentration of patulin on the adsorption characteristics were systematically investigated.

Replacing traditional plastic mulch with fully biodegradable mulch is an important research direction to solve the problem of "white pollution," but whether it can truly realize biodegradation is still the focus of many scholars. In this study, field and indoor experiments were carried out in Pingluo County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, using poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) fully biodegradable mulch film and ordinary polyethylene (PE) mulch film, with no mulch film (CK) as the control. Macroscopic characteristics such as the degree of apparent cracking of the mulch film, loss of the mulch film area, and the rate of weight loss were observed, and the results were combined with the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetry (TGR).
