Layered molybdenum disulfide has demonstrated great promise as a low-cost alternative to platinum-based catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen production from water. Research effort on this material has focused mainly on synthesizing highly nanostructured molybdenum disulfide that allows the exposure of a large fraction of active edge sites. Here we report a promising microwave-assisted strategy for the synthesis of narrow molybdenum disulfide nanosheets with edge-terminated structure and a significantly expanded interlayer spacing, which exhibit striking kinetic metrics with onset potential of -103 mV, Tafel slope of 49 mV per decade and exchange current density of 9.62 × 10(-3) mA cm(-2), performing among the best of current molybdenum disulfide catalysts. Besides benefits from the edge-terminated structure, the expanded interlayer distance with modified electronic structure is also responsible for the observed catalytic improvement, which suggests a potential way to design newly advanced molybdenum disulfide catalysts through modulating the interlayer distance.

Targeting the peculiarities of tumor tissue microenvironment different from normal tissue, such as lower pH and overexpression of hydrogen peroxide is the key to effective treatment. In this study, acid-responsive Z-scheme heterojunctions polyglycolated MoS/CoFeO (MoS = molybdenum disulfide, CoFeO = cobalt ferrite) was synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal method, designated as MSCO-PEG, guided by dual modes of photoacoustic imagine (PAI) and nuclear magnetic imaging (MRI). MSCO-PEG (PEG = polyethylene glycol) responded to the acidic environment of tumor tissues and overexpression of hydrogen peroxide to turn on multimodal synergistic treatment of tumor cells under near-infrared-II (NIR-II) illumination.

During fast-charging, uneven lithium plating on the surface of commercial graphite anode impedes the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries, causing a safety issue. The formation of a passivation layer, the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), due to side reactions with the organic electrolyte, correlates with long-term cycling performance under fast-charging conditions, necessitating comprehensive analysis. Herein, it is demonstrated that a molybdenum disulfide (MoS) coating on natural graphite (NG) modulates the properties of the SEI layer, enabling reduction of the charging time and the enhancement of long-term cycling performance.

Atomic scale, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analysis of the moiré structures in twisted epitaxial gold nanodiscs encapsulated in twisted bilayer molybdenum disulfide is presented. High angle annular dark field STEM imaging reveals that the period of the moiré patterns between gold and molybdenum disulfide varies with different twist angles of the bilayer molybdenum disulfide, ranging from 1.80 nm (epitaxial alignment of gold) to 1.

The design of mixed-dimensional heterostructures has emerged to be a new frontier of research as it induces exciting physical/chemical properties that extend beyond the fundamental properties of single dimensional systems. Therefore, rational design of heterostructured materials with novel surface chemistry and tailored interfacial properties appears to be very promising for the devices such as the gas sensors. Here, a highly sensitive gas sensor device is constructed by employing heterostructures of boron doped molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (B-MoS Qdots) assembled into the matrix of TiCT MXene.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, combining remarkable electrical properties and mechanical flexibility, offer fascinating opportunities for flexible integrated circuits (ICs). Despite notable progress, so far the showcased 2D flexible ICs have been constrained to basic logic gates and ring oscillators with a maximum integration scale of a few thin film transistors (TFTs), creating a significant disparity in terms of circuit scale and functionality. Here, we demonstrate medium-scale flexible ICs integrating both combinational and sequential elements based on 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS).
