Blood-derived APLP1 extracellular vesicles are potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis of brain diseases.

Sci Adv

January 2025

Department of Biotechnology, College of Life Science, CHA University, Gyeonggi-do 13488, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Early detection of neurodegenerative diseases relies on identifying brain-specific biomolecules in blood, and this study explores amyloid precursor-like protein 1 (APLP1) as a new biomarker found in extracellular vesicles (EVs).
  • The research confirms that APLP1 EVs in human blood come from the brain, supported by distinct small RNA patterns and the expression of miRNA targets that are highly present in brain tissue.
  • Validation using special mouse models (Thy-1 GFP M line) alongside data analysis highlights APLP1 EVs' potential as both diagnostic markers and key players in advancing neurodegenerative disease diagnosis.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that alpha-synuclein (α-syn) pathology associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) is not limited to the brain, as it also appears in a select number of peripheral tissues including the liver. In this study, we identified a number of PD-associated α-syn post-translational modifications in the livers of (Thy-1)-h[A30P] mice, a mouse model of familial PD expressing human α-syn harboring the A30P mutation driven by a neuron-specific promoter. , we also demonstrate that human hepatocytes induce post-translational modifications following α-syn fibrillar (PFF) treatment.

To better understand the role of thyroid hormones in regulating the growth of breast epithelial cells and the estrogen-like effects of these hormones, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between breast cancer and thyroid autoimmune disorders in southeast Iran women. In this case-control study, in the case group, all newly diagnosed breast cancer pa-tients referred to the oncology clinics in Zahedan city in years 2021‒2022 were studied. The num-ber of participants in each group was represented by 40 breast cancer patients.

Analysis of cellular effects by continuous exposure AT low concentration of tritium.

Radiat Prot Dosimetry

November 2024

Laboratory of Radiological Disasters and Medical Science, International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University, 519-1176 Aramaki-aza-Aoba, Aoba-ku, Sendai 980-0845, Japan.

This study investigated the induction of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in the hTERT-immortalized normal human diploid epithelial cells (RPE1-hTERT) continuously exposed to 6000 Bq/ml of tritiated water (HTO) and organically bound tritium (OBT). The relationship of the DSBs induction with the intracellular amount as well as the localization of tritium was also examined. Tritium-labeled thymidine (3H-Thy) and palmitic acid (3H-PA) were used as OBT.
