We report a template-based technique for the preparation of solution-dispersible nanorings composed of Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, and Pd with control over outer diameter (60-400 nm), inner diameter (25-230 nm), and height (40 nm to a few microns). Systematic and independent control of these parameters enables fine-tuning of the three characteristic localized surface plasmon resonance modes of Au nanorings and the resulting solution-based extinction spectra from the visible to the near-infrared. This synthetic approach provides a new pathway for solution-based investigations of surfaces with negative curvature.

We report the use of thermal dewetting to structure gold-based catalytic etching masks for metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE). The approach involves low-temperature dewetting of metal films to generate metal holey meshes with tunable morphologies. Combined with MACE, dewetting-assisted patterning is a simple, benchtop route to synthesize Si nanotubes, Si nanowalls, and Si nanowires with defined dimensions and optical properties.

We report a facile and low-cost method to directly exfoliate graphite powders into large-size, high-quality, and solution-dispersible few-layer graphene sheets. In this method, aqueous mixtures of graphite and inorganic salts such as NaCl and CuCl2 are stirred, and subsequently dried by evaporation. Finally, the mixture powders are dispersed into an orthogonal organic solvent solution of the salt by low-power and short-time ultrasonication, which exfoliates graphite into few-layer graphene sheets.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University, 2220 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL 60208, USA.

Multi-segmented nanowires with optically active hybrid core-shell regions are fabricated between two metal nanoantennas. These nanowires generate significant photocurrent under illumination and are solution-dispersible.

We report the synthesis of 43-nm diameter Au nanocube dimers by using Ag(+) ions as competitive ligands to freeze L-cysteine-induced assembly process of the nanocubes to a desirable stage. Ascribed to the resonant interparticle coupling with an newly arising plasmon band at 710 nm and local field enhancement, the two-photon luminescence intensity of the Au nanocube dimers in solution was over 20 times stronger than that of the monomers in the wavelength range 555-620 nm. Furthermore, by coupling Raman tags onto the nanocube surface, a solution-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the nanocube dimers had an enhancement factor of over 10 times compared to the isolated nanocubes.
