A common approach to generate tailored materials and nanoparticles (NPs) is the formation of molecular monolayers by chemisorption of bifunctional anchor molecules. This approach depends critically on the choice of a suitable anchor group. Recently, bifunctional catecholates, inspired by mussel-adhesive proteins (MAPs) and bacterial siderophores, have received considerable interest as anchor groups for biomedically relevant metal surfaces and nanoparticles. We report here the synthesis of new tripodal catecholates as multivalent anchor molecules for immobilization on metal surfaces and nanoparticles. The tripodal catecholates have been conjugated to various effector molecules such as PEG, a sulfobetaine and an adamantyl group. The potential of these conjugates has been demonstrated with the immobilization of tripodal catecholates on ZnO NPs. The results confirmed a high loading of tripodal PEG-catecholates on the particles and the formation of stable PEG layers in aqueous solution.

N-Centered Tripodal Phosphine Re(V) and Tc(V) Oxo Complexes: Revisiting a [3 + 2] Mixed-Ligand Approach.

N-Triphos derivatives (NP, R = alkyl, aryl) and asymmetric variants (NPX, R' = alkyl, aryl, X = OH, NR, NRR') are an underexplored class of tuneable, tripodal ligands in relation to the coordination chemistry of Re and Tc for biomedical applications. Mixed-ligand approaches are a flexible synthetic route to obtain Tc complexes of differing core structures and physicochemical properties. Reaction of the NP ligand with the Re(V) oxo precursor [ReOCl(PPh)] generated the bidentate complex [ReOCl(κ-NPOH)], which possesses an unusual AA'BB'XX' spin system with a characteristic second-order NMR lineshape that is sensitive to the bi- or tridentate nature of the coordinating diphosphine unit.

A dinuclear copper(ii) complex [Cu(papy)(CHOH)] has been synthesized by reaction of one equiv. of Cu(OAc)·2HO with one equiv. of the tetradentate tripodal ligand Hpapy [-(2-hydroxybenzyl)--(2-picolyl)glycine] and has been characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and its solid state structure has been confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis.

Catechol oxidase (CO) and phenoxazinone synthase (PHS) are two enzymes of immense significance due to their capability to oxidize catechols and -aminophenols to -quinones and phenoxazinones, respectively. In this connection two mononuclear manganese complexes with the molecular framework [Mn(Ln)Cl]Cl {L1: tris((1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)methyl)amine; = 1 and L2: tris(-methylbenzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine; = 2} have been designed to be potential catalysts for OAPH (-aminophenol) oxidation. Both the ligands and their corresponding metal complexes have been successfully synthesized and thoroughly characterized by different spectroscopic and analytical techniques such as FT-IR, H NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectroscopy.

The biscatechol, H4BP (4,4'-bis(3-tert-butyl-1,2-catechol)) that can directly connect two redox active catechol moieties was synthesized. Also, tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa), bis(2-pyridylmethyl)(2-quinolylmethyl)amine (bpqa), (2-pyridylmethyl)bis(2-quinolyl methyl)amine (pbqa), and tris (2-quinolylmethyl)amine (tqa) were synthesized as terminal ligands of the tetracoordinated tripod. In total, five different dinuclear Co complexes were synthesized from H4BP with various terminal ligands as follows, [Co2(BP)(tpa)2](PF6)2 (1), [Co2(BP)(tpa)2](PF6)3 (2), [Co2(BP)(bpqa)2](PF6)2 (3), [Co2(BP)(pbqa)2](PF6)2 (4), and [Co2(BP)(tqa)2](PF6)2 (5).

Peptoid-based siderophore mimics as dinuclear Fe chelators.

A practical synthesis of preorganized tripodal enterobactin/corynebactin-type ligands (consisting of a C-symmetric macrocyclic peptoid core, three catecholamide coordinating units, and C, C, and C spacers) is reported. The formation of complexes with Fe was investigated by spectrophotometric (UV-Vis) and spectrometric (ESI, negative ionization mode) methods and corroborated by theoretical (DFT) calculations. Preliminary studies revealed the intricate interplay between the conformational chirality of cyclic trimeric peptoids and metal coordination geometry of mononuclear species similar to that of natural catechol-based siderophores.
