Cilia are cellular projections that perform sensory and motile functions. A key ciliary subdomain is the transition zone, which lies between basal body and axoneme. Previous work in Caenorhabditis elegans identified two ciliopathy-associated protein complexes or modules that direct assembly of transition zone Y-links. Here, we identify C. elegans CEP290 as a component of a third module required to form an inner scaffolding structure called the central cylinder. Co-inhibition of all three modules completely disrupted transition zone structure. Surprisingly, axoneme assembly was only mildly perturbed. However, dendrite extension by retrograde migration was strongly impaired, revealing an unexpected role for the transition zone in cell adhesion.

The particle size-dependent processes of structural relaxation and crystal growth in amorphous nifedipine were studied by means of non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman microscopy. The enthalpy relaxation was described in terms of the Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan model, with the relaxation motions exhibiting the activation energy of 279 kJ·mol for the temperature shift, but with a significantly higher value of ~500 kJ·mol being obtained for the rapid transition from the glassy to the undercooled liquid state (the latter is in agreement with the activation energy of the viscous flow). This may suggest different types of relaxation kinetics manifesting during slow and rapid heating, with only a certain portion of the relaxation motions occurring that are dependent on the parameters of a given temperature range and time frame.

Subducted plates often stagnate in the mantle transition zone (MTZ), and the fate of the stagnant slabs is still debatable. They may sink into the lower mantle, or remain partially trapped in the MTZ, but it is uncertain whether they can return to the upper mantle. We report geochemical evidence of late-Miocene (~6 Ma) basalts from, and upper mantle seismic evidence beneath Shuangyashan, an area above the slab tear of the stagnant Pacific plate in eastern Asia, to show how the slab returns to the upper mantle from the MTZ.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and short-term (3-month) results of transperineal prostate thermal ablation (TPTA) as a minimally invasive outpatient treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Materials And Methods: A prospective nonrandomized study of 25 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to BPH seeking care at 2 interventional radiology centers between March and July 2024. TPTA was performed using a 17G radiofrequency needle with a 10-mm active tip under unconscious sedation combined with bilateral perineal and periprostatic nerve blocks.
