Synthetic MR: Clinical applications in neuroradiology.

Neuroradiology

January 2025

Department of Imaging Sciences and Interventional Radiology, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, 695011, Kerala, India.

Purpose: Synthetic MR is a quantitative MRI method that measures tissue relaxation times and generates multiple contrast-weighted images using suitable algorithms. The present article principally discusses the multiple dynamic multiple echo (MDME) technique of synthetic MR and briefly describes other quantitative MR sequences.

Methods: Using illustrative cases, various applications of the MDME sequence in neuroradiology are explained.

Objective: To explore the correlation between cardiac iron deposition and left ventricular function indicators, such as left ventricular end-diastolic volume index, left ventricular end-systolic volume index, and left ventricular ejection fraction, and to evaluate the accuracy of predicting patients with cardiac iron deposition by using left ventricular ejection fraction as an index.

Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study involved one hundred and fifty transfusion-dependent patients with β-thalassemia major who were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging to obtain * values, left ventricular end-diastolic volume index, left ventricular end-systolic volume index, and left ventricular ejection fraction. The relationship between cardiac * values and left ventricular end-diastolic volume index, left ventricular end-systolic volume index, and left ventricular ejection fraction was analyzed.

Prenatal hypoxia, a common pregnancy complication, can lead to vascular dysfunction, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease in the adult offspring. Carotid arteries are responsible for the majority of the blood flow to the brain/head, and carotid artery dysfunction is associated with life-threating cardiovascular events, such as stroke. However, whether prenatal hypoxia exposure impacts the function of the carotid arteries in the adult offspring is not known.

DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) exhibits promising pharmacological efficacy against ischemia-reperfusion injury, but its protective effects may involve many mechanisms that are yet to be fully understood. This study aimed to profile the metabolic alterations induced by NBP during the process of ischemia-reperfusion using spatial metabolomics. Our study found that NBP could significantly reduce the ischemic area and restore physical function by potentially modulating pathways of the citrate cycle, pyruvate metabolism, autophagy, and unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis.

Background: Early screening is critical for the prevention of ischemic stroke. miR-574-5p was considered a promising biomarker for ischemic stroke but lacks direct confirmation. This study evaluated miR-574-5p in discriminating ischemic stroke and predicting the severity and prognosis of patients, aiming to provide novel insights into the clinical prevention of ischemic stroke.
