The genus Odontophrynus consists of 11 species of medium-sized frogs distributed across south and east South America. This study examines and describes the chondrocrania and oral cavities of O. americanus, O. maisuma, O. carvalhoi, and O. cultripes, and review current knowledge about the larval external morphology of the genus. Twenty-one tadpoles were cleared and double-stained for chondrocranium description and five tadpoles were dissected for analysis in a scanning electron microscope. The presence of a tectum parientale may be considered here as a putative synapomorphy of the genus. The O. americanus and O. cultripes species groups were partially differentiated by the length of the processus pseudopterigoideus, shape of divergence of the hypobranchial plates, number of postnarial papillae, and number of projections of the lateral ridge papillae. The larvae of O. occidentalis species group, in turn, differed from others by presenting a greater total length.

The adaptation of amphibians to diverse environments is closely related to the characteristics of their skin. The complex glandular system of frog skin plays a pivotal role in enabling these animals to thrive in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and consists of crucial functions such as respiration and water balance as well as serving as a defensive barrier due to the secretion of bioactive compounds. We herein report the first investigation on the skin secretion of , as a potential source of bioactive peptides and also as an indicator of its evolutionary adaptations to changing environments.

Amphibians are the most vulnerable vertebrates to biodiversity loss mediated by habitat destruction, climate change and diseases. Informed conservation management requires improving the taxonomy of anurans to assess reliably the species' geographic range. The genus that is geographically refined to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay includes currently 12 nominal species with many populations of uncertain taxonomic assignment and subsequently unclear geographic ranges.

This article reviews the polyploidy events that have long been demonstrated to play a role in the evolution of Anura, while also discussing the importance of epigenetic control of gene expression and diversity. Findings on Brazilian autopolyploid anurans, mainly of the genus Odontophrynus, obtained in previous studies on their cytogenetics, chromatin ultrastructure, and molecular gene regulation are discussed here. Our data on genome duplication and on epigenetic events were analyzed here regarding phylogenetic trees, including the classic 2R model for vertebrate evolution and the growing evidence of similar epigenetic mechanisms in animal and allopolyploid plants.
