Study Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between kyphosis and lordosis measured by using a flexible ruler and musculoskeletal pain in students of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences.

Overview Of Literature: The spine supports the body during different activities by maintaining appropriate body alignment and posture. Normal alignment of the spine depends on its structural, muscular, bony, and articular performance.

Methods: Two hundred forty-one students participated in this study. A single examiner evaluated the angles of lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis by using a flexible ruler. To determine the severity and frequency of pain in low-back and inter-scapular regions, a tailor-made questionnaire with visual analog scale was used. Finally, using the Kendall correlation coefficient, the data were statistically analyzed.

Results: The mean value of lumbar lordosis was 34.46°±12.61° in female students and 22.46°±9.9° in male students. The mean value of lumbar lordosis significantly differed between female and male students (p<0.001). However, there was no difference in the level of the thoracic curve (p=0.288). Relationship between kyphosis measured by using a flexible ruler and inter-scapular pain in male and female students was not significant (p=0.946). However, the relationship between lumbar lordosis and low back pain was statistically significant (p=0.006). Also, no significant relationship was observed between abnormal kyphosis and frequency of inter-scapular pain, and between lumbar lordosis and low back pain.

Conclusions: Lumbar lordosis contributes to low back pain. The causes of musculoskeletal pain could be muscle imbalance and muscle and ligament strain.

Airborne ultrasound phased arrays (AUPAs) generate non-contact tactile sensations and enable acoustic levitation with specific focus fields. Using multiple units together offers numerous advantages, such as increased stimulus intensity and the ability to overcome occlusion. The AUPA units are typically mounted on a fixed frame, with their poses manually measured using tools such as a ruler for calibration.

Q-rich activation domains: flexible 'rulers' for transcription start site selection?

Trends Genet

December 2024

Dipartimento di Bioscienze, Università degli Studi di Milano, Via Celoria 26, 20133, Milano, Italy. Electronic address:

Recent findings broadened the function of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) proximal promoter motifs from quantitative regulators of transcription to important determinants of transcription start site (TSS) position. These motifs are recognized by transcription factors (TFs) that we propose to term 'ruler' TFs (rTFs), such as NRF1, NF-Y, YY1, ZNF143, BANP, and members of the SP, ETS, and CRE families, sharing as a common feature a glutamine-rich (Q-rich) effector domain also enriched in valine, isoleucine, and threonine (QVIT-rich). We propose that rTFs guide TSS location by constraining the position of the pre-initiation complex (PIC) during its promoter recognition phase through a specialized, and still enigmatic, class of activation domains.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates frozen shoulder syndrome, which causes pain and limited movement, focusing on the differences in posture and shoulder motion between primary and secondary cases in 55 female patients.
  • - Using various measurement tools, results revealed that those with primary frozen shoulder exhibited greater rounded shoulder and kyphosis angles compared to those with secondary frozen shoulder, indicating worse posture.
  • - Although overall shoulder motion was similar between groups, the primary frozen shoulder group struggled more with external rotation, highlighting distinct postural issues and movement limitations.

This study aimed to examine the effect of corrective exercises with massage on balance, motion performance, gait, and quality of life among elderly individuals with hyperkyphosis. Thirty elderly people were selected for this experimental study design, The training protocols were conducted for eight weeks, with three sessions each week. The thoracic kyphosis was measured by a flexible ruler.
