Promising mass spectrometry imaging: exploring microscale insights in food.

Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Marine Food Processing and Safety Control, College of Food Science and Engineering, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China.

This review focused on mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), a powerful tool in food analysis, covering its ion source schemes and procedures and their applications in food quality, safety, and nutrition to provide detailed insights into these aspects. The review presented a detailed introduction to both commonly used and emerging ionization sources, including nanoparticle laser desorption/ionization (NPs-LDI), air flow-assisted ionization (AFAI), desorption ionization with through-hole alumina membrane (DIUTHAME), plasma-assisted laser desorption ionization (PALDI), and low-temperature plasma (LTP). In the MSI process, particular emphasis was placed on quantitative MSI (QMSI) and super-resolution algorithms.

Background: Prostaglandin E (PGE) in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) has been recognized as a pivotal pressor substance in hypertension, yet understanding of its effects and origins in the RVLM remains largely elusive. This study aimed to elucidate the pivotal enzymes and molecular mechanisms underlying PGE synthesis induced by central Ang II (angiotensin II) and its implications in the heightened oxidative stress and sympathetic outflow in hypertension.

Methods And Results: RVLM microinjections of PGE and Tempol were administered in Wistar-Kyoto rats.

Background And Objectives: Assessment and care of substance use disorder within mental health services are essential due to the high prevalence and harms associated with comorbidity. Substance use disorder assessment and care are routinely recommended in clinical guidelines; however, processes are not agreed. This systematic review of routine clinical practice in relation to substance use disorders in adult mental health service aims to identify routine assessment and diagnosis processes, the proportion of patients and service episodes in which they occur and their outputs.

Introduction: Young childbearing sexual minority (SM) people are more likely to use cannabis and to have an unintended pregnancy than their heterosexual peers; however, little is known about their perceptions and experiences of peripartum cannabis use. This qualitative study explores the relationships young pregnant and parenting SM people have with cannabis, as well as their feelings and opinions about prenatal cannabis use.

Method: Participants who identified as SM from baseline surveys of the YoungMoms study were recruited for semi-structured qualitative interviews (n = 13).
