Tuberculosis and people who use drugs: why focus on this overlooked population is important and why adapted interventions are necessary.

Lancet Glob Health

January 2025

Pathogenesis and Control of Chronic and Emerging Infections, University of Montpellier, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

The liver is a unique organ where immunity can be biased toward ineffective response notably in the context of viral infections. Chronic viral hepatitis depends on the inability of the T-cell immune response to eradicate antigen. In the case of recombinant Adeno-Associated-Virus, used for therapeutic gene transfer, conflicting reports describe tolerance induction to different transgene products while other studies have shown conventional cytotoxic CD8 T cell responses with a rapid loss of transgene expression.

Introduction: Community-based overdose prevention sites (OPS) are recognized for reducing overdose deaths and the spread of HIV and hepatitis C among people who use drugs (PWUD). While some hospitals in Europe and Canada have successfully integrated OPS into their facilities, such integration remains illegal in the United States. This study explores the feasibility and acceptability of implementing an OPS at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), situated in an urban area with high rates of overdose.
