Purpose: Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a neurotrophic glycoprotein secreted by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) that supports retinal photoreceptor health. Deficits in PEDF are associated with increased inflammation and retinal degeneration in aging and diabetic retinopathy. We hypothesized that light-induced stress in C57BL/6J mice deficient in PEDF would lead to increased retinal neuronal and RPE defects, impaired expression of neurotrophic factor Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and overactivation of Galectin-3-mediated inflammatory signaling.

Purpose: To investigate the mechanism of paclitaxel (PTX)-induced macular edema and the therapeutic effect of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAI) on this condition.

Methods: The effect of PTX on cell morphology was detected by immunofluorescence. Cell barrier was measured by measuring cell resistance across the epithelium.

This study aimed to analyze Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) parameters and Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) changes in patients affected by Retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Eighteen eyes of 18 patients suffering from early-stage RP were enrolled in our observational study. 18 eyes of 18 patients age and gender matched were enrolled as controls.

Ophthalmologie

Universitäts-Augenklinik, Department für Augenheilkunde, Universität Tübingen, Elfriede-Aulhorn-Str. 7, 72076, Tübingen, Deutschland.

Electrophysiological examinations are used in ophthalmology to determine the functionality of the neurons of the visual pathway. As electrophysiological examinations are independent of the subjective perception and response of the patient, they are considered to be objective functional diagnostics of vision. Electroretinography (ERG) is used to examine the retina (especially the photoreceptors), electro-oculography (EOG) is used to examine the functionality of the retinal pigment epithelium and visually evoked potentials (VEP) are used to evaluate the integrity of the entire visual pathway.
