Department of Gynecology, Rio de Janeiro State University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Published: October 2015

Background: Tumor compression is a cause of portal hypertension. In adolescents, most tumors are germ cell tumors.

Case: We report the case of a 17-year-old female patient with progressive abdominal distention. Portal hypertension with ascites and esophageal varices were identified. A computed tomography scan showed a large ovarian mass that was consistent with a teratoma. After laparotomy, the portal hypertension was resolved.

Summary And Conclusion: Venous compression by an immature teratoma should be considered a cause of portal hypertension in adolescents.

Background And Aims: Around 750,000 patients per year will be cured of HCV infection until 2030. Those with compensated advanced chronic liver disease remain at risk for hepatic decompensation and de novo HCC. Algorithms have been developed to stratify risk early after cure; however, data on long-term outcomes and the prognostic utility of these risk stratification algorithms at later time points are lacking.

Endogenous C-type natriuretic peptide offsets the pathogenesis of steatohepatitis, hepatic fibrosis, and portal hypertension.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), hepatic fibrosis, and portal hypertension constitute an increasing public health problem due to the growing prevalence of obesity and diabetes. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is an endogenous regulator of cardiovascular homeostasis, immune cell reactivity, and fibrotic disease. Thus, we investigated a role for CNP in the pathogenesis of MASLD.

Background: Rebleeding after recovery from esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EGVB) is a severe complication that is associated with high rates of both incidence and mortality. Despite its clinical importance, recognized prognostic models that can effectively predict esophagogastric variceal rebleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis are lacking.

Aim: To construct and externally validate a reliable prognostic model for predicting the occurrence of esophagogastric variceal rebleeding.

Department of General Surgery, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, No.1, Minde Road, Nanchang, 330006, Jiangxi, China.

Background: HCC is characterized by a high interstitial fluid pressure (HIFP) environment, which appears to support cancer cell survival. However, the mechanisms behind this phenomenon are not fully understood.

Methods: This study investigates the role of kinesin family member 11 (KIF11) in HCC under HIFP conditions, using both in vivo and in vitro models.

Background: Positivity for anti-gp210 and anti-centromeric antibodies (ACA) in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have been associated with the progression of liver failure and portal hypertension (PH), respectively. The value of combining risk autoantibody assessments with prognostic scoring systems in improving risk assessment in patients with PBC remains unclear.

Aims: To investigate the prognostic significance of various combinations of anti-gp210 and ACA statuses and their enhancing the prognostic utility on the GLOBE scoring system.
