AI Article Synopsis

  • DISCUSS is a tool designed to help farmers enhance sustainable crop protection by combining risk and response indicators.
  • The system pairs POCER risk indicators with a management questionnaire to provide comprehensive insights into farm practices.
  • It allows for simulations to guide farmers in making informed crop protection decisions by incorporating personal protection and drift mitigation measures.

Article Abstract

DISCUSS, the Dual Indicator Set for Sustainable Crop protection Sustainability Surveys, was designed to help farmers achieve more sustainable crop protection. The indicator set pairs risk indicators--POCER--, with response indicators--a management questionnaire. Both parts of DISCUSS are indicators in their own right, but the dual risk-response setup has the additional trump that the questionnaire reveals farm level information, by which POCER calculations are refined. Simulations with personal protection and drift mitigation measures illustrate how DISCUSS can be used to support the farmers' crop protection decisions.

Manglietia decidua is an extremely endangered species, known for its limited population and a narrow distribution range restricted to China (Yu 1994). In October 2021, a leaf disease affecting the foliage of 3-year-old M. decidua was observed at the nursery garden of the Yichun Forestry Institute of Jiangxi Province (27°55'52.

Exploring the challenges of RNAi-based strategies for crop protection.

RNA silencing (or RNA interference, RNAi) initiated by double-stranded RNAs is a conserved mechanism for regulating gene expression in eukaryotes. RNAi-based crop protection strategies, including host-induced gene silencing (HIGS), spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) and microbe-induced gene silencing (MIGS), have been successfully used against various pests and pathogens. Here, we highlight the challenges surrounding dsRNA design, large-scale production of dsRNA and dsRNA delivery systems.

Brazilian soils have distinctive characteristics to European and North American soils which are typically used to investigate pesticide fate. This study aimed to compare soil-water partition coefficient (K), reversibility of adsorption and degradation half-life (DT) of 5 pesticides covering a wide range of physico-chemical properties in contrasting Brazilian soils (Argissolo, Gleissolo, Latossolo and Neossolo) and a temperate (UK) alfisol soil, and to study their relationship with soil OM, clay and expandable clay content, CEC and pH. In addition, we used a novel laboratory test to evaluate sorption reversibility, the 3-Phase Assay (3PA).
