Optimal fetal growth: a misconception?

Alterations in fetal growth trajectory, either in terms of individual organs or the fetal body, constitute part of a suite of adaptive responses that the fetus can make to a developmental challenge such as inadequate nutrition. Nonetheless, despite substantial changes in nutrition in many countries over recent centuries, mean birthweight has changed relatively little. Low birthweight is recognized as a risk factor for later noncommunicable disease, although the developmental origins of such risk are graded across the full range of fetal growth and birthweight. Many parental and environmental factors, some biological and some cultural, can influence fetal growth, and these should not be viewed as abnormal. We argue that the suggestion of establishing a universal standard for optimal fetal growth ignores the breadth of these normal fetal responses. It may influence practice adversely, through incorrect estimation of gestational age and unnecessary elective deliveries. It raises ethical as well as practical issues.

Leukemic stem cells (LSCs) fuel acute myeloid leukemia (AML) growth and relapse, but therapies tailored towards eradicating LSCs without harming normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are lacking. FLT3 is considered an important therapeutic target due to frequent mutation in AML and association with relapse. However, there has been limited clinical success with FLT3 drug targeting, suggesting either that FLT3 is not a vulnerability in LSC, or that more potent inhibition is required, a scenario where HSC toxicity could become limiting.

In this study, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of highly soluble dextran-coated CeO nanoparticles on human fetal lung fibroblasts MRC-5. We examined individual nanoparticle-treated cells by Raman spectroscopy and analyzed Raman spectra using non-negative principal component analysis and k-means clustering. In this way, we determined dose-dependent differences between treated cells, which were reflected through the intensity change of lipid, phospholipid and RNA-related Raman modes.
