Propagation-based imaging or inline holography in combination with computed tomography (holotomography) is a versatile tool to access a sample's three-dimensional (3D) micro or nano structure. However, the phase retrieval step needed prior to tomographic reconstruction can be challenging especially for strongly absorbing and refracting samples. Near-field ptychography is a recently developed phase imaging method that has been proven to overcome this hurdle in projection data. In this work we extend near-field ptychography to three dimensions and we show that, in combination with tomography, it can access the nano structure of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The quality of the resulting tomographic data and the structural properties of the anode extracted from this volume were compared to previous results obtained with holotomography. This work highlights the potential of 3D near-field ptychography for reliable and detailed investigations of samples at the nanometer scale, with important applications in materials and life sciences among others.

X-ray speckles have been used in a wide range of experiments, including imaging (and tomography), wavefront sensing, spatial coherence measurements, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and ptychography. In this review and experimental comparison, we focus on using X-ray near-field speckle grains as wavefront markers and numerical methods for retrieving the phase information they contain. We present the most common tracking methods, introducing the existing algorithms with their specifications and comparing their performances under various experimental conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Ptychography is now widely used in microscopy for greater imaging precision but is limited by the coherence of the light sources used.
  • A new universal reconstruction algorithm has been developed that works effectively even with low coherence, improving image quality without needing prior source information.
  • This algorithm enhances existing ptychographic systems, leading to faster and more stable reconstructions, especially beneficial for imaging weakly scattering samples.

We introduce a method for the computational sectioning of optically thick samples based on a combination of near-field and multi-slice ptychography. The method enables a large field-of-view 3D phase imaging of samples that is an order of magnitude thicker than the depth of field of bright-field microscopy. An axial resolution for these thick samples is maintained in the presence of multiple scattering, revealing a complex structure beyond the depth of the field limit.

A new configuration for near-field ptychography using a full-field illumination with a structured electron beam is proposed. A structured electron beam illuminating the entire field of view is scanned over the specimen, and a series of in-line holograms formed in the near-field region below the specimen are collected. The structured beam is generated by a conductive film with random openings, which ensures high stability and coherence of the beam.

We examine the interplay between spectral bandwidth and illumination curvature in ptychography. By tailoring the divergence of the illumination, broader spectral bandwidths can be tolerated without requiring algorithmic modifications to the forward model. In particular, a strong wavefront curvature transitions a far-field diffraction geometry to an effectively near-field one, which is less affected by temporal coherence effects.
