Determining the severity of acute mesenteric ischemia or reperfusion injury can be problematic, as early visceral hypoperfusion is difficult to detect by traditional laboratory testing. Likewise gauging the success of resuscitation and therapeutic intervention is also challenging to determine by laboratory analysis alone. Investigators continue to actively search for plasma biomarkers that will aide clinicians in identifying the early microvascular changes associated with visceral splanchnic malperfusion in an effort to allow for earlier diagnosis and expedient intervention in order to minimize overall intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury for the potential of improving clinical outcomes.
Overreaching, a consequence of intensified training, is used by athletes to enhance performance. A blunted hormonal response to a 30-min interval exercise stress test (55/80) has been shown in males after intensified training, highlighting cortisol and testosterone as potential biomarkers of overreaching. Despite accounting for ~50% of the population, studies into hormonal responses to exercise in females are lacking.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and biomarkers are needed to enhance earlier detection and monitoring. Alpha-synuclein, phosphorylated at serine 129 (pS129-α-syn), is the predominant form of α-syn found in Lewy bodies implicating an involvement in disease pathology. This review aims to systematically evaluate the evidence for pS129-α-syn detection in human biofluid samples of PD utilizing ELISA-based protein detection methods.
The generalisability of critical illness molecular phenotypes to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is unknown. We show that molecular phenotypes derived in high-income countries (hyperinflammatory and hypoinflammatory, reactive and uninflamed) stratify sepsis patients in Uganda by physiological severity, mortality risk and dysregulation of key pathobiological domains. Skin carotenoids can be measured non-invasively using spectroscopy methods to provide a biomarker of total dietary carotenoid and carotenoid-rich fruit and vegetable intake. However, the degree to which skin carotenoid biomarkers reflect intakes of specific carotenoids must be determined for specific devices.
