The present research aimed to document the incidence, clinical signs, haematological, and serum biochemical alterations, as well as electrocardiography and echocardiography findings in 62 buffaloes (selected from a total of 240) infected with Trypanosoma evansi. The study spanned one year, from January 2022 to December 2022. Morphological identification of Trypanosoma evansi was done by the presence of a centrally positioned nucleus with a small sub-terminal kinetoplast at the posterior position through microscopic examination of Giemsa stained peripheral blood smears.

Background: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) syndromes include thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and haemolytic uremic syndrome, and contribute to myocardial infarction and multiple organ failure. Although coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is the key for understanding the pathophysiology of cardiac involvement in TMA, there is limited knowledge on the recovery from CMD in patients with TMA.

Case Summary: An 80-year-old woman was brought to the emergency department due to worsening back pain, dyspnoea on exertion, jaundice, and fever.

Article Synopsis
  • There is growing evidence that COVID-19 causes a prothrombotic state, meaning it leads to increased blood clot formation, which can be investigated through post-mortem examinations.
  • An autopsy analysis of seven COVID-19 patients revealed the presence of thrombi, or blood clots, in the lungs, heart, kidneys, and liver, regardless of whether the patients were treated with anticoagulants.
  • Findings included higher numbers of specific blood cell types in certain organs, significant lung damage, and limited inflammation in the heart, indicating that clotting and vascular damage are key features in the pathology of severe COVID-19 cases.
