Although functional significance of large noncoding RNAs and their complexes with proteins is well recognized, structural information for this class of systems is very scarce. Their inherent flexibility causes problems in crystallographic approaches, while their typical size is beyond the limits of state-of-the-art purely NMR-based approaches. Here, we review an approach that combines high-resolution NMR restraints with lower resolution long-range constraints based on site-directed spin labeling and measurements of distance distribution restraints in the range between 15 and 80Å by the four-pulse double electron-electron resonance (DEER) EPR technique. We discuss sample preparation, the basic assumptions behind data analysis in the EPR-based distance measurements, treatment of the label-based constraints in generation of the structure, and the back-calculation of distance distributions for structure validation. Step-by-step protocols are provided for DEER distance distribution measurements including data analysis and for CYANA based structure calculation using combined NMR and EPR data.

LiCoPO and LiNiPO phosphate pigments have colorations very close to the primary colors of the subtractive system: magenta and yellow, respectively. These two pigments are therefore of great interest in a variety of applications, including e-reader devices. However, the need to reduce their crystallite size in order to formulate stable electrophoretic inks has revealed that aggressive milling results in significant color changes, particularly for cobalt-based pigments.

In this work a novel method for synthesis of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene melanin was presented, as well as the physicochemical properties, molecular structure, and characteristics of the pigment. The proposed synthesis protocol is simple and cost-effective with no enzymes or catalysts needed. The final product is not adsorbed on any surface, since the pigment is the result of autooxidation of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a spectroscopic technique based on the absorption of radiofrequency radiation by atomic nuclei in the presence of an external magnetic field. NMR has followed a "bottom-up" approach to solve the structures of isolated domains of viral proteins, including capsid protein subunits, or to provide information about other macromolecular partners with which such proteins interact. NMR has been instrumental in describing conformational changes in viral proteins and nucleic acids, showing the presence of dynamic equilibria which are thought to be important at different stages of the virus life cycle.

Herein, SUMO-LUMO inversion (SLI) radicals - were designed by the combination of the tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radical and pyridinium derivatives (electron-withdrawing groups) for the first time. The energy of the LUMO lies below that of the SUMO, which deviated from the Aufbau principle as an alternative electronic configuration beyond the well-established SOMO-HOMO inversed system. Thus, for SLI radicals, the injection of one extra electron preferred to occupy the LUMO rather than the SUMO, giving diradicals, one of which had been fully confirmed by single crystal analysis, VT-NMR and VT-EPR experiments, as well as DFT calculations.

Heterologous expression of nitrogenase has been actively pursued because of the far-reaching impact of this enzyme on agriculture, energy and environment. Yet, isolation of an active two-component, metallocentre-containing nitrogenase from a non-diazotrophic host has yet to be accomplished. Here, we report the heterologous synthesis of an active Mo-nitrogenase by combining genes from and in .
