A facile and direct protocol to determine the absolute configurations of chiral mono-alcohols without analyte derivatization can now be realized using a novel circular dichroic (CD)-sensitive bis(zinc porphyrin) BP1 host system. The binding of mono-alcohols to BP1 should be greatly enhanced by the simultaneous double coordination of the hydroxyl group to the two central metals of the porphyrin subunits.

Metalloporphyrins: their multitalented nature as observed in multi-metal complex systems.

Five topics pertaining to the unique chemistry of metalloporphyrins as observed in multi-metal complex systems are introduced. The topics include the following: (i) the unique chromatographic separation of cyclic porphyrins on modified silica gel; (ii) room temperature phosphorescence from the zinc porphyrin part in a zinc porphyrin/rhenium complex hetero dyad; (iii) the substituent effect, in the preparation of a readily soluble special-pair-type zinc porphyrin dimer/rhenium complex having efficient photocatalytic CO reduction ability; (iv) assessment of the excited triplet state of a special-pair-type zinc porphyrin dimer in macrocyclic multiporphyrin rings; and (v) solvation/desolvation indicators based on exclusive transformation between the head-head type and head-tail type of supramolecular co-ordination polymers composed of bis(zinc porphyrin)s.

Porphyrin dimers have been widely explored and studied owing to their importance in photosynthetic systems. A vast variety of dimers linked by different groups and at different angles have been synthesized and studied; however, the means by which to synthesize rigidly fused porphyrins with direct conjugation of the chromophores remains limited. Such a class of porphyrins may possess interesting properties that unconjugated or stacked dimers may not exhibit.

In order to investigate the ability of bis(zinc octaethylporphyrin) () to discriminate cyclohexanohemicucurbit[n]urils () of different shapes and sizes, the self-assembly of barrel-shaped chiral with was studied by various spectroscopic methods (absorption, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD), and NMR). While the binding of 6-membered induced a tweezer-like conformation followed by the formation of form of upon further addition of , the interaction of 8-membered is more complex and proceeds through the featured -to- conformational change of and further intermolecular self-assembly via multiple noncovalent associations between and . Whilst bis-porphyrins are known to be effective chemical sensors able to differentiate various guests based on their chirality via induced CD, their ability to sense small differences in the shape and size of relatively large macrocycles, such as chiral and , is scarcely examined.

A series of rigid and conformationally restricted cyclic bis(zinc porphyrin)s connected via 2,2'-bipyridine and phthalamide, isophthalamide, or terephthalamide moieties were prepared by metal-templated synthesis. The yields were significantly improved when compared with those obtained under metal-free conditions. In particular, phthalamide and terephthalamide derivatives were obtained only by metal-templated synthesis.

A stiff-stilbene-linked bisporphyrin tweezer with inherent helicity was used for exciton-coupled circular dichroism (ECCD) characterization of a series of monotopically binding amine guest molecules. CD signals were observed for a variety of monoamines at relatively low tweezer/amine (host/guest) ratios between 1 : 10 to 1 : 70. For the amines producing the most intense CD signals, a binding stoichiometry of 1 : 2 was found.
