In the present study 20 human brains were used to verify the presence of a small body projecting into the floor of the straight sinus at its junction with the great cerebral vein. The elevation could be identified at the anterior end of the floor of the straight sinus with an empty cavity underlying it. Histologically, the elevation was found to consist of interwoven bundles of collagen fibres covered by vascular endothelium continuous with that of the straight sinus. The importance of such an elevation in the regulation of blood flow from the great cerebral vein to the straight sinus is discussed from a hydrodynamic point of view.

Objective: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) with deep venous drainage (DVD) (DAVFs-DVD) are characteristically associated with non-hemorrhagic neurological deficits, most notably cognitive impairment. Large studies have yet to thoroughly characterize these DAVFs. We conducted an analysis of the largest cohort of DAVFs-DVD to provide a comprehensive characterization of this specific subset.

Objectives: To report one-year outcomes of prosthetic rehabilitation of the atrophic maxillae, supported by angled abutments on zygomatic implants and conventional implants.

Methods: In the present retrospective analysis, edentulous maxillary areas treated with fixed-hybrid prostheses supported by angled abutments of 45, 52.5, and 60 degrees screwed to zygomatic implants inserted using an extrasinus surgical approach were included.

Venous Compromise/Deep Venous Thrombosis During Parasagittal Meningiomas Resection.

Acta Neurochir Suppl

November 2024

Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • JB, a 28-year-old male, presented to the hospital in 2009 with a progressively increasing mass on his head that had been deforming it since 2005 and experienced his first seizure around the same time.
  • After neurological examination and imaging confirmed the presence of a large tumor in the parietal region, he underwent surgery which included craniotomy and tumor resection.
  • Despite initially regaining some movement after surgery, he unfortunately passed away in the second postoperative week due to a pulmonary embolism, prompting a review of the case to address the complications and suggest better management strategies.

Angle between vein of Galen and straight sinus: a novel marker on microvascular flow imaging for prenatal assessment of tentorium cerebelli position.

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol

December 2024

Department of Ultrasound, Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the use of a new measurement called the angle between the vein of Galen and the straight sinus (AVGS) to assess the position of a critical brain structure (the tentorium cerebelli) in fetuses, which is important for diagnosing posterior fossa anomalies (PFAs) that can lead to various neurodevelopmental disabilities.
  • - Conducted at two hospitals in Beijing, the study measured AVGS in 602 singleton pregnancies (522 normal and 50 with intracranial malformations) between 16 and 38 weeks of gestation, establishing a reference range for healthy fetuses and predicting the positions of the tentorium in affected fetuses.
  • - Results showed that AVGS decreased as gest

Introduction/background: Venous sinus thrombosis hypercoagulable states leads to delayed drainage of blood from the brain; consequently, resulting in cerebral oedema, raised intracranial pressure, or stroke. Causes are variable, including severe dehydration, infections, cancers, sinusitis, and brain surgery. The commonest symptoms are headache, seizures, and unconsciousness.
