Multiple Second Primary Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas in a Nonsmoker and Nondrinker Woman: Case Report and Review of the Literature. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

  • - The manuscript details a rare case of a 64-year-old woman, who is a nonsmoker and nondrinker, developing multiple second primary squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in her oral mucosa over a 7-year period.
  • - It highlights the lack of reliable methods to predict which patients will develop second primary tumors (SPTs) after initially being treated for SCC, emphasizing the need for careful long-term follow-up for such patients.
  • - The case emphasizes the importance of monitoring and managing patients for potential SPTs, as their development significantly worsens prognosis, even in individuals without traditional risk factors for oral cancer.

Article Abstract

Aim: This manuscript aims to describe an unusual case of multiple second primary squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in several sites of the oral mucosa in a nonsmoker and nondrinker woman and to discuss the diagnostic criteria, clinicopathological aspects and outcome of second primary tumor (SPT).

Background: Patients treated for SCC of the head and neck are at high risk for developing SPT arising from the same dysplastic mucosal feld. Currently, there is no reliable method to predict which of the patients will develop SPT.

Case Description: A 64-year-old nonsmoker and nondrinker woman developed several second primary oral SCCs in 7 years of follow-up, most of them being synchronic, treated by surgery without and with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Conclusion: Patients treated for SCC require a long-term and careful follow-up as the development of SPT contributes with significantly negative impact on the prognosis.

Clinical Significance: This report describes the diagnosis and management of a very unusual case of several SPTs affecting different sites of the oral mucosa in the same patient. Moreover, the patient had no apparent risk factors associated with the development of the oral cancer. Therefore, a brief update concerning SPT and its diagnosis and management is also provided.

Gliomas are the most common tumors of the central nervous system, with glioblastoma (GBM) being particularly aggressive and fatal. Current treatments for GBM, including surgery and chemotherapy, are limited by tumor aggressiveness and the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms driving GBM growth is essential.

Background: It is common to protect people from air pollution by wearing masks, but how much of its health effect on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is unknown. This study aimed to determine whether the mask intervention associated with decrease in stroke morbidity and mortality.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comprising 7.

Low libido is a common and potentially distressing problem among midlife and older women. We recently reported results from a pilot randomized controlled trial of a mindfulness intervention for midlife and older cisgender women with low libido; the purpose of this qualitative investigation is to illustrate women's experiences with being recruited for, enrolling in, and participating in the trial. We conducted individual interviews with a subset of trial participants, some of whom attended a group-based mindfulness intervention and some attended an educational control group (N = 25).

Skin flap transplantation is a primary method for wound repair; however, postoperative skin flap necrosis remains a significant challenge. Kaempferol, a flavonol abundant in various foods, exhibits diverse pharmacological effects. This study investigated the potential targets of kaempferol for treating skin flap ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury through network pharmacology and molecular docking, followed by in vivo validation.

Background: Although fractional flow reserve (FFR) is the contemporary standard to detect hemodynamically significant coronary stenosis, it remains underused for the need of pressure wire and hyperemic stimulus. Coronary angiography-derived FFR could break through these barriers. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and performance of a novel diagnostic modality deriving FFR from invasive coronary angiography (AccuFFRangio) for coronary physiological assessment.
