Several independent observations have suggested that the catastrophe transition in microtubules is not a first-order process, as is usually assumed. Recent in vitro observations by Gardner et al. [M. K. Gardner et al., Cell 147, 1092 (2011)] showed that microtubule catastrophe takes place via multiple steps and the frequency increases with the age of the filament. Here we investigate, via numerical simulations and mathematical calculations, some of the consequences of the age dependence of catastrophe on the dynamics of microtubules as a function of the aging rate, for two different models of aging: exponential growth, but saturating asymptotically, and purely linear growth. The boundary demarcating the steady-state and non-steady-state regimes in the dynamics is derived analytically in both cases. Numerical simulations, supported by analytical calculations in the linear model, show that aging leads to nonexponential length distributions in steady state. More importantly, oscillations ensue in microtubule length and velocity. The regularity of oscillations, as characterized by the negative dip in the autocorrelation function, is reduced by increasing the frequency of rescue events. Our study shows that the age dependence of catastrophe could function as an intrinsic mechanism to generate oscillatory dynamics in a microtubule population, distinct from hitherto identified ones.

Spherical tanks have been predominantly used in process industries due to their large storage capability. The fundamental challenges in process industries require a very efficient controller to control the various process parameters owing to their nonlinear behavior. The current research work in this paper aims to propose the Approximate Generalized Time Moments (AGTM) optimization technique for designing Fractional-Order PI (FOPI) and Fractional-Order PID (FOPID) controllers for the nonlinear Single Spherical Tank Liquid Level System (SSTLLS).

The mechanical responses of sandy soil under dynamic loading is closely related to protective engineering and geotechnical engineering, is still not fully understood. To investigate the energy attenuation law and propagation velocity of compressed waves in dry sandy soil, this paper focuses on the dynamic response of compression waves in the specimen under single impact and repetitive impact conditions using an improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results reveal that the length of the specimen follows an exponential relationship with the attenuation of the peak stress.

Tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) hosted in atomically-thin semiconductors have emerged as prospective elements in optoelectronic devices for ultrafast and secured information transfer. The controlled exciton transport in such excitonic devices requires manipulating potential energy gradient of charge-neutral excitons, while electrical gating or nanoscale straining have shown limited efficiency of exciton transport at room temperature. Here, we report strain gradient induced exciton transport in monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe) across microns at room temperature via steady-state pump-probe measurement.

Background: Subcutaneous emicizumab, a factor VIII (FVIII)-mimicking bispecific monoclonal antibody, can effectively prevent bleeds in haemophilia A (HA) patients with/without inhibitors; however, its standard-dose regimens are financially burdensome. Low-dose emicizumab prophylaxis may alternatively be applied to noninhibitor HA patients in resource-limited settings.
Methods: During 2023, Thai patients with noninhibitor severe HA or moderate HA with severe bleeding phenotype (historical annualized bleeding rate [ABR] >5 bleeds/year before regular FVIII prophylaxis) who received low-/intermediate-dose FVIII secondary prophylaxis ≥8 months were enrolled.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by defects in alpha-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGLU) and characterized by severe effects in the central nervous system. Mutations in NAGLU cause accumulation of partially degraded heparan sulfate in lysosomes. The consequences of these mutations on whole genome gene expression and their causal relationships to neural degeneration remain unknown.
