We consider a leaky integrate-and-fire neuron with deterministic subthreshold dynamics and a firing threshold that evolves as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The formulation of this minimal model is motivated by the experimentally observed widespread variation of neural firing thresholds. We show numerically that the mean first-passage time can depend nonmonotonically on the noise amplitude. For sufficiently large values of the correlation time of the stochastic threshold the mean first-passage time is maximal for nonvanishing noise. We provide an explanation for this effect by analytically transforming the original model into a first-passage-time problem for Brownian motion. This transformation also allows for a perturbative calculation of the first-passage-time histograms. In turn this provides quantitative insights into the mechanisms that lead to the nonmonotonic behavior of the mean first-passage time. The perturbation expansion is in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations. The approach developed here can be applied to any deterministic subthreshold dynamics and any Gauss-Markov processes for the firing threshold. This opens up the possibility to incorporate biophysically detailed components into the subthreshold dynamics, rendering our approach a powerful framework that sits between traditional integrate-and-fire models and complex mechanistic descriptions of neural dynamics.

Zebra finches undergo a gradual refinement of their vocalizations, transitioning from variable juvenile songs to the stereotyped song of adulthood. To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying song crystallization-a critical phase in this developmental process-we performed intracellular recordings in HVC (a premotor nucleus essential for song learning and production) of juvenile birds. We then compared these recordings to previously published electrophysiological data from adult birds.

Mixed affective states in bipolar disorder (BD) is a common psychiatric condition that occurs when symptoms of the two opposite poles coexist during an episode of mania or depression. A four-dimensional model by Goldbeter (Progr Biophys Mol Biol 105:119-127, 2011; Pharmacopsychiatry 46:S44-S52, 2013) rests upon the notion that manic and depressive symptoms are produced by two competing and auto-inhibited neural networks. Some of the rich dynamics that this model can produce, include complex rhythms formed by both small-amplitude (subthreshold) and large-amplitude (suprathreshold) oscillations and could correspond to mixed bipolar states.

Voltage imaging is a powerful technique for studying neuronal activity, but its effectiveness is often constrained by low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Traditional denoising methods, such as matrix factorization, impose rigid assumptions about noise and signal structures, while existing deep learning approaches fail to fully capture the rapid dynamics and complex dependencies inherent in voltage imaging data. Here, we introduce CellMincer, a novel self-supervised deep learning method specifically developed for denoising voltage imaging datasets.

Genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) allow optical recording of membrane potential from targeted cells . However, red GEVIs that are compatible with two-photon microscopy and that can be multiplexed with green reporters like GCaMP, are currently lacking. To address this gap, we explored diverse rhodopsin proteins as GEVIs and engineered a novel GEVI, 2Photron, based on a rhodopsin from the green algae .

We demonstrate the excitation of the gyrotropic mode in a magnetostrictive vortex by time-varying strain. The vortex dynamics is driven by a time-varying voltage applied to the piezoelectric substrate and detected electrically by spin rectification at subthreshold values of rf current. When the frequency of the time-varying strain matches the gyrotropic frequency at a given in-plane magnetic field, the strain-induced in-plane magnetic anisotropy leads to a resonant excitation of the gyration dynamics in the magnetic vortex.
