Pioneering inspiration: Right next to the former laboratories of Johannes Hartmann, the first so-called "Professor of Chymiatrie", the 2015 Frontiers in Medicinal Chemistry meeting was held last March at Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. Herein we give readers an idea of what it was like to attend the conference, which was organized jointly by the DPhG, GDCh, and SCS. Along with the lectures, we also describe the poster sessions, social program, and awards.

Over the past decade, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed the treatment of cancer, though they come with the risk of immune-related adverse (irAEs) events such as hepatotoxicity or Immune-mediated Liver Injury from Checkpoint Inhibitors (ILICI). ILICI is a serious irAE that, when severe, requires cessation of ICI and initiation of immunosuppression. Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTLs) play a central role in ILICI; however, they are just part of the picture as immunotherapy broadly impacts all aspects of the immune microenvironment and can directly and indirectly activate innate and adaptive immune cells.

The efficient isolation and molecular analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from whole blood at single-cell level are crucial for understanding tumor metastasis and developing personalized treatments. The viability of isolated cells is the key prerequisite for the downstream molecular analysis, especially for RNA sequencing. This study develops a laser-induced forward transfer -assisted microfiltration system (LIFT-AMFS) for high-viability CTC enrichment and retrieval from whole blood.

The imperative for developing robust tools to detect, analyze, and characterize viruses has become increasingly evident as they continue to threaten human health. In this review, we focus on recent advancements in studying human viruses with flow virometry (FV), an emerging technique that has gained considerable momentum over the past 5 years. These advancements include the application of FV in viral surface phenotyping, viral protein functionality, virus sorting, vaccine development, and diagnostics.
