The data associating blood pressure to salt intake in humans comes from randomized clinical trials of interventions on dietary salt intake and population studies. Generally, estimates from meta-analyses are similar to those derived from prospective population studies (1.7 mm Hg change in systolic blood pressure per 100 mmol change in 24-hour urinary sodium). This observation, however, does not translate into a higher risk of incidence rate of hypertension in individuals consuming a highsalt diet. On the other hand, prospective studies relating cardiovascular outcomes to 24-h urinary sodium excretion produced inconsistent conclusions. Thus, available evidence does not support current recommendations of an indiscriminate and generalized reduction of salt intake in the general population.

Tau Pathology Drives Disease-Associated Astrocyte Reactivity in Salt-Induced Neurodegeneration.

Dietary high salt intake is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies have identified a population of disease-associated astrocytes (DAA)-like astrocytes closely linked to amyloid deposition and tau pathology in an AD mouse model. However, the presence and role of these astrocytes in high-salt diet (HSD) models remain unexplored.

Internal tremor (IT) is often reported by patients with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, also known as Long COVID, as a distressing and disabling symptom. Similarly, physicians are typically perplexed by the nature and etiology of IT and find it extremely challenging to manage. We describe a patient with Long COVID who experienced IT as part of post-COVID postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and small fiber neuropathy (SFN) and review the limited literature available on this topic.

National Engineering Research Center of Wheat and Corn Further Processing, School of Food Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, China. Electronic address:

The morbidity of the chronic diseases such as the hypertension and cardiovascular diseases has been increasing in recent decades. The unhealthy diet with excessive salt intake is one of the proegumenal causes. In this research, spherical hollow salt particles with high specific surface area and durable ginger flavor were prepared as a seasoning powder for salt reduction and saltiness enhancement in solid foods.

Iodine intakes of pregnant females from Québec, Canada.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

January 2025

Reproduction, Mother and Child Health Unit, Research Center of the CHU de Québec, Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada; Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction, CHU de Québec-Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Adequate maternal iodine intake is important for fetal brain development. Based on iodine intakes of non-pregnant females of reproductive age from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (2016 -2017) it can be extrapolated that most pregnant females in Canada will not meet iodine requirements without supplementation.

Objectives: To assess iodine intakes of 500 pregnant, nulliparous females from Québec, Canada and report on use of multivitamin/mineral (MVM) supplements and coverage of iodized salt.
