Published: August 2015

Objectives: To compare scapular posterior tilting exercise alone and scapular posterior tilting exercise after pectoralis minor (PM) stretching on the PM index (PMI), scapular anterior tilting index, scapular upward rotation angle, and scapular upward rotators' activity in subjects with a short PM.

Participants: Fifteen subjects with a short PM participated in this study.

Main Outcome Measures: The PMI, scapular anterior tilting index, and scapular upward rotation angle were measured after scapular posterior tilting exercise alone and scapular posterior tilting exercise after PM stretches. Scapular upward rotators' activities were collected during scapular posterior tilting exercise alone and scapular posterior tilting exercise after PM stretches.

Results: The PMI and scapular upward rotation angle, as well as the activity of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior muscles, were significantly greater for scapular posterior tilting exercise after PM stretching and the scapular anterior tilting index was significantly lower for scapular posterior tilting exercise after PM stretching than the scapular posterior tilting exercise alone.

Conclusions: Scapular posterior tilting exercise after PM stretching in subjects with a short PM could be an effective method of modifying scapular alignment and scapular upward rotator activity.

Does Scapular and Thoracic Morphology Affect Latarjet Alpha Angle?

J Clin Med

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul 34093, Turkey.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between alpha angle (the angle between the screws and the glenoid) and thoracic diameters in patients undergoing the Latarjet procedure. Defining the relationship between thoracic morphology and alpha angle is aimed at filling the gap in the literature and improving surgical outcomes. This retrospective study analyzed 74 patients who underwent the Latarjet procedure for recurrent anterior shoulder instability between 2022 and 2024.

Case: A 75-year-old woman status post total shoulder arthroplasty and posterior rib resection 29 years previously experienced a low-energy intrathoracic scapular dislocation (ISD). Closed reduction under anesthesia was unsuccessful, and she required open surgical repair performed by a novel modification of Kibler's technique for medial scapular muscle repair.

Conclusion: This case is unique because increased range of motion after successful arthroplasty allowed her shoulder to flex forward enough to result in ISD.

Posterior neck, trapezius, and interscapular pain, exacerbated by poor posture such as forward head and rounded shoulders, is common. In this study, we aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of isotonic saline injections at nerve entrapment points (NEPs) within the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and scalenus medius (SM) muscles for alleviating spinal accessory nerve (SAN) and dorsal scapular nerve (DSN) compression in patients suffering from posterior neck, trapezius, and interscapular pain. In this retrospective study, 68 patients were included, with 34 receiving isotonic saline injections and 34 undergoing Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) as a control.

Effects of Biceps Rerouting on In Vivo Glenohumeral Kinematics in the Treatment of Large-to-Massive Rotator Cuff Tears.

Am J Sports Med

January 2025

Department of Sports Medicine, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Background: Arthroscopic repair with the biceps rerouting (BR) technique has been determined to lead to promising clinical and biomechanical outcomes for treating large-to-massive rotator cuff tears (LMRCTs). However, the in vivo effects of BR on glenohumeral kinematics during functional shoulder movements have not been fully elucidated.

Purpose: To investigate whether BR provides a better restoration of shoulder kinematics compared with conventional rotator cuff repair (RCR).

Rare bilateral vascular variations of the upper limb: a cadaveric case study.

J Cardiothorac Surg

Centre for Human Anatomy Education, Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Biomedical Discovery Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University, Clayton, Australia.

Arterial variations in the upper limb are of significant clinical importance, especially in procedures such as venepunctures, coronary artery bypass grafts, trauma reconstructive surgeries, brachial plexus nerve blocks, and breast reconstructions. This report presents previously undocumented arterial variations in the upper limbs in a 95-year-old female cadaveric donor. We observed bilateral superficial ulnar arteries originating at the cubital fossa, deviating from the previously reported origin at the proximal brachial artery.
