Nanoalloys and nanocomposites are widely studied classes of nanomaterials within the context of biological systems. They are of immense interest because of the possibility of tuning the optical, magnetic, electronic and chemical properties through particle composition and internal architecture. In principle these properties can therefore be optimized for application in biological detections such as of DNA sequences, bacteria, viruses, antibodies, antigens, and cancer cells. This article presents an overview of methods currently used for nanoalloy and nanocomposite synthesis and characterisation, focusing on Au-Ag and FexOy@Au structures as primary components in detection platforms for plasmonic and magnetically enabled plasmonic bio-sensing.

Conversion of nitrogen (N) to ammonia (NH) is a significant process that occurs in environment and in the field of chemistry, but the traditional NH synthesis method requires high energy and pollutes the environment. In this work, the charge, orbital and spin order of the single-atom Fe loaded on heteroatom (X) doped-MoCS (X = B, N, O, F, P and Se) and its synergistic effect on electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) were investigated using well-defined density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results revealed that the X-element modified the charge loss capability of Fe atoms and thereby introduced a net spin through heteroatom doping, resulting in the magnetic moment modulation of Fe.

In view of the recent increased interest in light-induced manipulation of magnetism in nanometric length scales this work presents metal clusters as promising elementary units for generating all-optical ultrafast magnetization. We perform a theoretical study of the opto-magnetic properties of metal clusters through ab-initio real-time (RT) simulations in real-space using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Through ab-initio calculations of plasmon excitation with circularly polarized laser pulse in atomically precise clusters of simple and noble metals, we discuss the generation of orbital magnetic moments due to the transfer of angular momentum from light field through optical absorption at resonance energies.

In this study, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were successfully synthesized and supported on a cost-effective, eco-friendly magnetic lignosulfonate matrix using Hibiscus Rosasinensis L. leaf extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent (Pd@Fe₃O₄-lignosulfonate). The magnetic lignosulfonate prevented the aggregation of Pd NPs, enhanced the active surface area, and improved the hydrophilicity of the modified carbon paste electrode (CPE), thus boosting hydrogen production efficiency.

This paper presents functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (FeO@Au MNPs) combined with the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique for sensitive detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) protein biomarker carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). FeO@Au MNPs were constructed by the PEI-mediated seed growth method. Then, the signal molecule 5-5'-dithiobis (succinimidyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid) was used as a bridging agent to link CA19-9 antibody, and the SERS sensor was prepared.

While noble metal nanoparticles (MNPs) exhibit remarkable performance in heterogeneous catalysis and their incorporation into crystalline materials can fully exploit the combined advantages of both, achieving introduction of nanoclusters during material crystallization, precisely controlling their interactions, and facilitating catalyst recovery remain significant challenges. In this study, Au NPs, Pt NPs, and Pd NPs are supported on magnetic FeO, enabling the modulation of the electronic states of MNPs by adjusting the introduction method. Notably, the catalysts (Pt/FeO, Au/FeO, and Pd/FeO) demonstrate excellent activity in chemoselective reactions: cinnamaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation (turnover number: 20,135 h), nitrobenzene hydrogenation (with 99.
