Dehydroandrographolide succinate attenuates dexamethasone-induced skeletal muscle atrophy by regulating Akt/GSK3β and MuRF-1 pathways.

Eur J Pharmacol

January 2025

Department of Physiology, School of Medicine, Konkuk University, 120 Neungdong-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, 05029, South Korea. Electronic address:

Andrographis paniculata (AGPA) is known for its wide-ranging biological activities, including antiviral, antipyretic, and anticancer properties. However, its effects on muscle atrophy have not been well understood. This study investigates the impact of andrographolide (AD) and dehydroandrographolide succinate (DAS), key components of AGPA, on skeletal muscle atrophy using in vitro and in vivo models.

A woman in her mid-60s who is a high hypermetrope presented with bilateral eye pain and headache approximately 1 hour after taking a single dose of a widely available decongestant containing paracetamol, guaifenesin and phenylephrine hydrochloride for coryzal symptoms. She had previous successful bilateral peripheral iridotomies performed for narrow angles. At presentation, her intraocular pressures (IOPs) were significantly raised at 72 mm Hg and 66 mm Hg in the right and left eye, respectively, with bilateral corneal oedema.

Embryonic dexamethasone exposure exacerbates hepatic steatosis and APAP-mediated liver injury in zebrafish.

Dexamethasone (DXMS), a synthetic glucocorticoid, is known for its pharmacological effects on anti-inflammation, stress response enhancement and immune suppression, and has been widely used to treat potential premature delivery and related diseases. However, emerging evidence has shown that prenatal DXMS exposure leads to increased susceptibility to multiple diseases. In the present study, we used zebrafish as a model to study the effects of embryonic DXMS exposure on liver development and disease.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 era drug combinations on hepatic functionality: A thorough investigation in adult Danio rerio.

Laboratorio de Toxicología Ambiental, Facultad de Química, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, Paseo Colón Intersección Paseo Tollocan, Colonia Residencial Colón, CP, 50120, Toluca, Estado de México, Mexico.

Current and thorough information on the ecotoxicological consequences of pharmaceuticals is accessible globally. However, there remains a substantial gap in knowledge concerning the potentially toxic effects of COVID-19 used drugs, individually and combined, on aquatic organisms. Given the factors above, our investigation assumes pivotal importance in elucidating whether or not paracetamol, dexamethasone, metformin, and their tertiary mixtures might prompt histological impairment, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in the liver of zebrafish.

Non-opioid analgesic combinations following total hip arthroplasty (RECIPE): a randomised, placebo-controlled, blinded, multicentre trial.

Lancet Rheumatol

April 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital, Køge, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background: Multimodal postoperative analgesia following total hip arthroplasty is recommended, but the optimal combination of drugs remains uncertain. The aim of the RECIPE trial was to investigate the relative benefit and harm of the different combinations of paracetamol, ibuprofen, and the analgesic adjuvant dexamethasone for treatment of postoperative pain following total hip arthroplasty.

Methods: The RECIPE trial was a randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled trial conducted at nine Danish hospitals.
