Published: January 2016

This introductory paper offers a contemporary view of crystal nucleation. We begin with a molecular interpretation of the transition state and then revisit the use of classical nucleation theory as a means of obtaining molecular scale information from kinetic data. Traditional physical organic chemistry has always utilised the combination of kinetics and thermodynamics in order to gain insight over reaction pathways. Here we demonstrate for the cases of sucrose and p-aminobenzoic acid how solution chemistry, crystallography and kinetics come together to provide self-consistent pictures of the molecular scale processes occurring during nucleation. In this and a number of other systems desolvation of specific functional groups is highlighted as the rate determining step. Finally we move on to discuss the question of complexity, both from a phase and molecular perspective.

Growth of Hexagonal Boron Nitride from Molten Nickel Solutions: A Reactive Molecular Dynamics Study.

Metal flux methods are excellent for synthesizing high-quality hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystals, but the atomic mechanisms of hBN nucleation and growth in these systems are poorly understood and difficult to probe experimentally. Here, we harness classical reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF) to unravel the mechanisms of hBN synthesis from liquid nickel solvent over time scales up to 30 ns. These simulations mimic experimental conditions by including relatively large liquid nickel slabs containing dissolved boron and a molecular nitrogen gas phase.

The spatial distribution of fat crystals significantly impacts the stability and digestion properties of emulsions. This study investigated the templating effect of monoglycerides in controlling the spatial distribution of solid fat crystallization within double emulsions. Double emulsions were formulated with glyceryl monostearate (GMS), glyceryl monolaurate (GML), glyceryl monooleate (GMO), beeswax (BW), glyceryl distearate (GDS), and glyceryl tristearate (GTS) in the oil phase.

Porous lead iodide (PbI) film is crucial for the complete reaction between PbI and ammonium salts in sequential-deposition technology so as to achieve high crystallinity perovskite film. Herein, it is found that the tensile stress in tin (IV) oxide (SnO) electron transport layer (ETL) is a key factor influencing the morphology and crystallization of PbI films. Focusing on this, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiOTf) is used as an interfacial modifier in the SnO/PbI interface to decrease the tensile stress to reduce the necessary critical Gibbs free energy for PbI nuclei formation.

Anomalous entropy-driven kinetics of dislocation nucleation.

Nat Commun

Theoretical Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, USA.

The kinetics of dislocation reactions, such as dislocation multiplication, controls the plastic deformation in crystals beyond their elastic limit, therefore critical mechanisms in a number of applications in materials science. We present a series of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations that shows that one such type of reactions, the nucleation of dislocation at free surfaces, exhibit unconventional kinetics, including unexpectedly large nucleation rates under compression, very strong entropic stabilization under tension, as well as strong non-Arrhenius behavior. These unusual kinetics are quantitatively rationalized using a variational transition state theory approach coupled with an efficient numerical scheme for the estimation of vibrational entropy changes.
