We herein introduce a kind of fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) bioprobes, that is, peptides-conjugated SiNPs, which simultaneously feature small sizes (<10 nm), biological functionality, and stable and strong fluorescence (photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY): ∼28%), as well as favorable biocompatibility. Taking advantage of these merits, we further demonstrate such resultant SiNPs bioprobes are superbly suitable for real-time immunofluorescence imaging of cancer cells. Meanwhile, malignant tumor cells could be specifically destroyed by the peptides-conjugated SiNPs, suggesting potential promise of simultaneous detection and treatment of cancer cells.

Carbohydrate-functionalized quantum dots exhibit excellent physical characteristics and enhance the steric interaction with biological cells and tissues. Glycoconjugation of quantum dots promotes aqueous solubility, stability, and reduced immunogenicity. Carbohydrate-protein interactions are involved in various vital processes and provide insight into cellular recognition, cell-to-cell communication, pathogenicity, antigen-antibody recognition, and enzymatic action.

Fluorescent antennas (FAs) exhibit considerable promise in optical wireless communication (OWC), primarily due to their advantages over conventional optical systems in terms of optical gain and field of view (FoV). This paper presents a COMSOL-based model designed to optimize external light-concentrating structures for FAs, with its accuracy validated through both qualitative and quantitative comparisons. Leveraging refractive index modulation and the conservation of optical étendue, two distinct light-concentrating structures are developed.

Chemiluminescence offers ultrasensitive imaging for the diagnosis of a variety of diseases by removing the interference from excitation light sources. Here, we prepared two chemiluminescent metal-organic frameworks (Mn-ADA and Zn-ADA) by using (2,2')-3,3'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diacrylic acid (ADA) as a ligand. In Mn-ADA and Zn-ADA, the Mn atoms and Zn atoms are six-coordinated and eight-coordinated, respectively, and their frameworks are different in spatial structure.

Artificially designed, functional nanostructured surfaces, called metasurfaces, are an emerging platform for biosensing. Two major types of metasurface biosensors have been reported: one is based on resonant-wavelength shift and the other is specialized for fluorescence (FL) detection. The all-dielectric metasurfaces that composed of periodic arrays of silicon nanocolumns have a series of optical magnetic-mode resonances, some of which were found to significantly enhance capability for FL detection of diverse target biomolecules, ranging from nucleic acid to antigens and antibodies.
