A series of titanium pyridonate complexes have been synthesized under very mild reaction conditions from a common precursor, Ti(NMe2)4. These complexes have been explored as initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide and ε-caprolactone and have proven to be competitive with leading titanium initiators. Furthermore, these complexes have been shown to be competent initiators for the synthesis of copolymers (CL-LA block copolymers and random copolymers). Metal complex reactivity trends in both homo- and copolymerization show that poly(lactic acid) is most susceptible to chain scission and transesterification.

Nestin is a type VI intermediate filament protein and a well-known neural stem cell marker. It is also expressed in high-grade cancer cells, forming copolymerized filaments with vimentin. We previously showed that nestin inhibits the binding of vimentin's tail domain to actin filaments (AFs) by steric hindrance through its large nestin tail domain (NTD), thereby increasing three-dimensional cytoskeleton network mobility, enhancing cell flexibility, and promoting cancer progression.

Stable Antifouling and Antibacterial Coating Based on Assembly of Copper-Phenolic Networks.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1H9, Canada.

Biofilm formation on medical devices has become a worldwide issue arising from its resistance to bactericidal agents and presenting challenges to eradicating biofouling adhesion, especially in biological fluids. Metal-phenolic networks have been demonstrated as a versatile and efficient strategy to prevent biofilm formation by endowing medical devices with prolonged antifouling and antibacterial activities in a one-step surface modification. In this study, we report a simple and environmentally friendly method using coordination chemistry between copper ions (Cu) and dopamine-containing copolymer to fabricate metal-phenolic network-based coatings.

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels have attracted significant attention in fields such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing, primarily due to their excellent water-retention capacity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This study reports the preparation of a hydrogel through the copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) using a simple free-radical polymerization method. β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), capable of encapsulating hydrophobic drugs, was chemically modified with double bonds (Ac-β-CD) and incorporated as a pendant unit in the polymerization reaction, forming a ternary copolymer hydrogel with CMC, AM, and Ac-β-CD.

Degradable polymers are an emerging research interest. The innovation of new degradable polymers for biomedical applications is challenging due to strict demands including nontoxicity of polymers and degraded products, complete degradation to avoid polymer residues in the body, and other suitable properties. Here, we demonstrate a series of degradable polymers for sustained-release drug applications synthesized by the alternating copolymerization of cyclic anhydrides and Schiff bases.

This study aims to construct a novel drug delivery strategy to address the poor bioavailability and biostability of curcumin. A curcumin delivery strategy, basing on post-polymerization modification of poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl azlactone) to obtain conjugates of curcumin and dendritic polymers, combined with sodium alginate coating is reported. The curcumin-polymer conjugates were shown to have good fluorescence properties with fluorescence quantum yields of 0.
