Background: Paralytic ectropion is a significantly functional and esthetic problem leading to problems with lacrimation, corneal exposure, and poor palpebral closure. Limitations with traditional corrective procedures include poor apposition of the lid to the globe, suboptimal medial canthal position, and high recurrence rates.

Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a technique of lower-lid suspension using transnasal wiring for the long-term maintenance of lid position.

Methods: Twenty-three consecutive patients with complete unilateral facial nerve paralysis underwent the procedure, and they were followed up for a median of 27 months (1-73 months).

Results: Fifteen of 18 patients maintained their intraoperative lower-lid position beyond the 12-month follow-up. Three patients had a minimal scleral show at 3 months. One of these patients also developed lid laxity seen on the snap test. No perioperative complications were experienced.

Conclusions: Transnasal wiring of the lower-lid tendon suspension provides consistent results that are maintained over time.

Background: Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) are widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance image contrast by interacting with water molecules, thus improving diagnostic capabilities. However, understanding the residual accumulation of GBCA in tissues after administration remains an area of active research. This highlights the need for advanced analytical techniques capable of investigating interactions between GBCAs and biopolymers, such as type I collagen, which are abundant in the body.

The original LaPrade technique for anatomic reconstruction of the posterolateral corner of the knee uses two separate allografts. More recently, a modification of this technique, using an adjustable-length suspension device with a cortical button for tibial fixation, allows anatomic reconstruction with a single semitendinosus autograft. This modification is of utmost relevance when sources of allograft are not available for multiligament knee reconstruction.

Can the Suspension Method (Tenderstretch vs. Achilles Tendon) Enhance Horsemeat Quality?

Animals (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Animal Science, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Jamnikarjeva 101, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

This study investigated whether the suspension method (tenderstretch, TS or Achilles tendon, AT) can improve the quality of horsemeat by analyzing longissimus dorsi (LD) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles. A total of 25 horse carcasses were considered experimental units and split longitudinally, with one half suspended using the TS method and the other half using the AT method, which enabled a direct comparison within the carcass. After 7 days of aging under commercial processing conditions, the LD and ST muscles were analyzed for pH, color (L*, a*, b*), water-holding capacity (drip loss, thawing loss, cooking loss), tenderness (Warner-Bratzler shear force), and sarcomere length.

Neuromuscular mechanisms for the fast decline in rate of force development with muscle disuse - a narrative review.

October 2024

Human Performance Research Centre, Department of Sports Science, University of Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany.

The removal of skeletal muscle tension (unloading or disuse) is followed by many changes in the neuromuscular system, including muscle atrophy and loss of isometric maximal strength (measured by maximal force, F). Explosive strength, i.e.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the anatomical connections between rotator cuff muscles and the rotator cable using cadaveric shoulders.
  • 30 shoulders from 20 cadavers were dissected to observe the attachment and orientation of the rotator cable, while assessing the presence and severity of shoulder pathologies.
  • Findings revealed that the infraspinatus muscle had a looser attachment to the rotator cable compared to the supraspinatus and teres minor, suggesting different functional roles which may be influenced by shoulder pathology.
