Published: November 2015

Case Report: An 84 year-old woman with persistent epithelial defect and a dense stromal infiltrate post-corneal transplantation. According to the microbiological results, it was due to a Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) resistant to all antibiotics except trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX). Healing was achieved after three weeks of treatment with oral and topical TMP/SMX.

Discussion: S. maltophilia is an opportunistic microorganism rarely described in ophthalmology. It is associated with conjunctivitis, keratitis, scleritis, dacryrocystitis, cellulitis, and endophthalmitis with significant morbidity. Treatment is complicated because of its resistances to broad-spectrum antibiotics. TMP/SMX monotherapy can be considered an option of treatment for this type of keratitis.

Neonates are particularly vulnerable to infection with but information on presentation, therapeutic response and outcome of such infection in this population is limited. To expand this knowledge, we report here a series of five cases.

Background: We report a unique case of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia-related pediatric endogenous endophthalmitis.

Case Presentation: A 10-year-old male presented with redness and loss of vision in his right eye for two weeks. Clinical examination and ultrasound features were suggestive of endophthalmitis, most likely endogenous due to the absence of a history of trauma or intraocular intervention.

, an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forms a symbiotic relationship with , a rare and endangered species crucial to desert riparian ecosystems. In this study, endofungal bacteria (EFBs) within the fruiting bodies of were confirmed by a polyphasic approach, including genomic sequencing, real-time quantitative PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene, full-length and next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the 16S rRNA gene, and culture methods. The genera , , , and were abundant in the EFBs of fruiting bodies associated with three hosts and were consistently present across different developmental stages.
