Single-handed twisted titania tubular nanoribbons were prepared through sol-gel transcription using a pair of enantiomers. Handedness was controlled by that of the template. The obtained samples were characterized using field-emission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance circular dichroism (DRCD), and X-ray diffraction. The DRCD spectra indicated that the titania nanotubes exhibit optical activity. Although the tubular structure was destroyed after being calcined at 700 °C for 2.0 h, DRCD signals were still identified. However, the DRCD signals disappeared after being calcined at 1000 °C for 2.0 h. The optical activity of titania was proposed to be due to chiral defects. Previous results showed that straight titania tubes could be used as asymmetric autocatalysts, indicating that titania exhibit chirality at the angstrom level. Herein, it was found that they also exhibit DRCD signals, indicating that there are no obvious relationships between morphology at the nano level and chirality at the angstrom level. The nanotube chirality should originate from the chiral defects on the nanotube inner surface. The Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that the chirality of the titania was transferred from the gelators through the hydrogen bonding between N-H and Ti-OH.

In this work, chiroptical crystalline complexes of PEI/Tart (P/T) consisting of linear poly(ethylemeimine) (PEI) and an enantiomeric excess (ee) of tartaric acid (Tart) were used as chiral catalytic templates in the hydrolytic condensation of titanium bislactates and co-condensation of titanium bislactates and tetramethoxysilane for the preparation of chiral titania (TiO) and chiral titania/silica (TiO/SiO) hybrid. Different from the general case of enantiopure templates excelling in chiral transformation when compared to enantiomeric excess ones, P/T systems with different enantiomer ratios exhibited each activity in the transformation of their chiral information to the resulting minerals titania and titania/silica. Especially, the P/T complexes with ee only by ±4% (D/L = 52/48 or 48/52), which is near the racemic state (D/L = 50/50), served as excellent chiral catalytic templates to generate chiroptical titania and titania/silica with mirror relation of the CD signals.

Diabetes-related cognitive dysfunction (DRCD) is a serious complication induced by diabetes. However, there are currently no specific remedies for DRCD. Here, we show that streptozotocin-induced DRCD can be prevented without causing side effects through oral administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from .

Constructing novel chiral inorganic nanomaterials is an emerging branch in chirality research. In this work, by employing a solid magnesiothermic reaction at 500-600 °C, we reduced chiral SiO nanofibers with average diameter ∼10 nm into chiral Si nanoplates with a size of about several hundred nm. The chirality of the as-prepared Si was judged by the pair of signals with a mirror relationship between 400-500 nm that appeared on the solid-state diffuse reflectance circular dichroism (DRCD) spectra for the l- and d-form Si.
