Two new strongylophorine derivatives, along with six known strongylophorines, were isolated from the marine sponge Petrosia corticata as proteasome inhibitors. Of these, a hemiacetal mixture of strongylophorines-13/-14 was the strongest inhibitor of the proteasome with an IC50 of 2.1μM.

Marine-derived actinobacteria isolated from sponge and soft coral were screened for antibacterial activity against acne-related bacteria, specifically ATCC 14990, methicillin-resistant ATCC BAA44, and ATCC 6919. Cytotoxicity assays were performed on human dermal fibroblast (HDFa) and keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines to assess the safety profile of the extracts. Chemical characterization was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).

Biomineralization is a green synthesis route for a variety of metal nanoparticles. Silicatein is a biomineralization protein originally found in marine sponge that converts inorganic precursors to metal oxide nanoparticles. In this work, we investigate the popular catalytic triad hypothesis and implement directed evolution with the aim to improve the solubility and kinetics of silicatein to enable increased nanoparticle synthesis.

Spatial changes in benthic community structure have been observed across natural gradients in deep-sea ecosystems, but these patterns remain under-sampled on seamounts. Here, we identify the spatial composition and distribution of coral and sponge taxa on four sides of a single central Pacific equatorial "model" seamount within the US EEZ surrounding the Howland and Baker unit of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument. This seamount rises from 5,000 + m to mesophotic depths of 196 m, and is influenced by the Equatorial Undercurrent.
