4-N,N'-dimethylamino-4'-N'-stilbenemaleamic acid (DASMA), a unique molecular photochrome probe that exhibits solubility and retains trans-cis photoisomerisation in a wide range of organic solvents and aqueous pH environments, was prepared, purified and chemically characterised. Absorption, fluorescence excitation and emission spectra and constant-illumination fluorescence decay were measured in acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethanol, propylene carbonate, and aqueous glycerol mixtures. The pseudo-first-order fluorescence decay rates were found to be strongly dependent on the medium viscosity. In addition, the molecule exhibited the pH-dependent fluorescence and photoisomerisation kinetics.

Optically responsive materials are applied in sensing, actuators, and optical devices. One such class of material is dye-doped liquid crystal polymers that self-assemble into cholesteric mesophases that reflect visible light. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a family of linear and mildly crosslinked terpolymers prepared by the ROMP of norbornene-based monomers.

Photoswitchable molecules with structural flexibility can exhibit a complex ground state potential energy landscape due to the accessibility of multiple metastable states at merely low energy barriers. However, conventional bulk analytical techniques are limited in their ability to probe these metastable ground states and their relative energies. This is partially due to the difficulty of inducing changes in small molecules in their ground state, as they do not respond to external stimuli, such as mechanical force, unless they are incorporated into larger polymer networks.

Vanadate has become an important indicator for environmental testing due to its high toxicity, mobility, and difficulty in degradation. In addition, depending on its dynamic aggregation, analyzing vanadate is not a single content test; it needs further morphological analysis. Previous research has tended to construct a single functional platform with complicated procedures and expensive equipment, making it difficult to obtain a comprehensive picture of vanadate in a short time.

Non-volatile photomemory based on photomodulated luminescent materials offers unique advantages over voltage-driven memory, including low residual crosstalk and high storage speed. However, conventional materials have thus far been volatile and insecure for data storage because of low trap depth and single-level storage channels. Therefore, the development of a novel non-volatile multilevel storage medium for data encryption remains a challenge.
