The anchoring effect on free-base carboxyphenyl porphyrin films using TiO2 microstructured columns as a host matrix and its influence on NO2 sensing have been studied in this work. Three porphyrins have been used: 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)10,15,20-triphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (MCTPP); 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (p-TCPP); and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3-carboxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (m-TCPP). The analysis of UV-Vis spectra of MCTPP/TiO2, p-TCPP/TiO2 and m-TCPP/TiO2 composite films has revealed that m-TCPP/TiO2 films are the most stable, showing less aggregation than the other porphyrins. IR spectroscopy has shown that m-TCPP is bound to TiO2 through its four carboxylic acid groups, while p-TCPP is anchored by only one or two of these groups. MCTPP can only be bound by one carboxylic acid. Consequently, the binding of p-TCPP and MCTPP to the substrate allows them to form aggregates, whereas the more fixed anchoring of m-TCPP reduces this effect. The exposure of MCTPP/TiO2, p-TCPP/TiO2 and m-TCPP/TiO2 films to NO2 has resulted in important changes in their UV-Vis spectra, revealing good sensing capabilities in all cases. The improved stability of films made with m-TCPP suggests this molecule as the best candidate among our set of porphyrins for the fabrication of NO2 sensors. Moreover, their concentration-dependent responses upon exposure to low concentrations of NO2 confirm the potential of m-TCPP as a NO2 sensor.

Free-base porphyrins can be protonated, which significantly impacts their electronic and excited state properties. While excited state dynamics are well explored for either neutral or fully protonated porphyrins, the intermediate region has not yet been explored, although their potential implications for photocatalytic reactions are evident. This study explores how partial protonation affects the nature and properties of photoexcited states of tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) using steady-state and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy.

Porphyrins play pivotal roles in many crucial biological processes including photosynthesis. However, there is still a knowledge gap in understanding electronic and excited state implications associated with functionalization of the porphyrin ring system. These effects can have electrochemical and spectroscopic signatures that reveal the complex nature of these somewhat minor substitutions, beyond simple inductive or electronic effect correlations.

Herein, one kind of neutral chiral zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) was reported from the porphyrinic MOF (PMOF) family with a metallolinker (Mn-porphyrin) as the achiral polytopic linker [free base tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin] and chiral anions. Achiral Zr-MOF was chiralized through the exchange of primitive anions with new chiral organic anions (postsynthetic exchange). This chiral functional porphyrinic MOF (CPMOF) was characterized by several techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, H NMR, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements.

The aggregation of a free base porphyrin, -tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin and its Zn(II) derivative have been studied at the air/water interface in the presence of a --butylcalyx[8]arene matrix. The mixed Langmuir films were obtained either by premixing the compounds (cospreading) or by sequential addition. The negative deviation from the additivity rule of the cospread films is indicative of a comparatively good miscibility that was further confirmed by Brewster angle microscopy.

We investigated the adsorption of different free-base carboxyl-functionalized porphyrins, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-21,23H-porphyrin (2H-TCPP) and 5(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin (2H-MCTPP), on MgO nanocubes combining IR, UV/Vis and photoluminescence emission spectroscopy. The thermal behavior of the films was monitored in-situ during annealing. Both porphyrins bind to the nanocubes via one and two acid groups respectively, yielding monolayer films consisting of tilted molecules.
