A new type of shape-memory polymer (SMP) is developed by integrating scientific principles drawn from two disparate fields: the fast-growing photonic crystal and SMP technologies. This new SMP enables room-temperature operation for the entire shape-memory cycle and instantaneous shape recovery triggered by exposure to a variety of organic vapors.

In situ monitoring of small molecule diffusion at solid-solid interfaces is challenging, even with sophisticated equipment. Here, novel chromogenic photonic crystal detectors enabled by integrating bioinspired structural color with stimuli-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) for detecting trace amounts of small molecule interfacial diffusion are reported. Colorless macroporous SMP membranes with deformed macropores can recover back to the "memorized" photonic crystal microstructures and the corresponding iridescent structural colors when triggered by diffused small molecules.

Vaginal candidiasis (VC) is a prevalent condition among women of reproductive age and poses a significant global public health challenge. However, the disease is often diagnosed and treated without mycological information. We investigated the epidemiology, laboratory diagnostics, and antifungal susceptibility of VC.

Thermochromic coatings hold promise in reducing building energy consumption by dynamically regulating the heat gain of windows, which are often regarded as less energy-efficient components, across different seasons. Vanadium dioxide (VO) stands out as a versatile thermochromic material for smart windows owing to its reversible metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) alongside correlated structural and optical properties. In this review, we delve into recent advancements in the phase-change VO-based thermochromic coatings for smart windows, spanning from the macroscopic crystal level to the microscopic structural level (including elemental doping and micro/nano-engineering), as well as advances in controllable fabrication.

Objective: In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of antimicrobial blue light (aBL; 410 nm wavelength) against β-lactamase-carrying bacteria and the effect of aBL on the activity of β-lactamases.
Methods: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains carrying β-lactamases as well as a purified β-lactamase enzymes were studied. β-lactamase activity was assessed using a chromogenic cephalosporin hydrolysis assay.

Visualizing spatial patterns of gene expression by optical microscopy at single-molecule resolution represents a long-standing challenge for imaging and molecular engineering technologies. In this study, we developed a method for visualizing mRNA with duplex capability by optical microscopy using rolling circle amplification with streptavidin-modified alkaline phosphatase (SA-ALP) to provide highly selective and sensitive RNA detection. ALP-based RNA detection provides comparable sensitivity and specificity to fluorescence-based assays and similar performance to the current RNAscope technique for single-molecule RNA detection, but with improved ease of operation.
