N-Nitroso-N-methylurea (NMU) is a potent carcinogen and suspected as a cause of human cancer. In this study, mutagenic NMU was detected by HPLC after the transnitrosation of non-mutagenic N-nitrosoproline (NP) to N-methylurea in the presence of thiourea (TU) under acidic conditions. The structure of NMU was confirmed by comparing (1)H NMR and IR spectra with that of authentic NMU after fractionation by column chromatography. Furthermore, a fraction containing NMU formed by transnitrosation was mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium TA1535. NMU was formed in the reaction of NP and N-methylurea in the presence of 1,1,3,3-tetramethylthiourea (TTU) or 1,3-dimethylthiourea in place of TU as an accelerator. The reaction rate constants (k) for NMU formation were correlated with their nucleophilicity of sulfur atom in thioureas. The N-methylurea concentration did not affect the NMU formation, whereas the rate of NMU formation correlated linearly with concentrations of NP, TTU and oxonium ion. The observed kinetics suggests a mechanism by which the nitroso group was transferred directly from the protonated NP to the thiourea then to N-methylurea to form NMU. The rate-determining step was the formation of the complex with the protonated NP and thiourea.

Soil salinization poses a substantial threat to global food security, particularly under the influence of climate change, and is recognized as one of the most urgent challenges in land degradation. This study aims to elucidate the challenges associated with managing arid and semi-arid saline-alkali lands in China's Ningxia province and propose feasible solutions. To assess moss crust colonization, we measured changes in organic matter and chlorophyll levels.

Although traditional type II heterojunction designs for artificial photosynthesis show promise for photocatalytic hydrogen production, their redox capacity is somewhat limited due to the spatial separation of hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions at less favorable sites. To overcome this limitation, ohmic junctions based on type II heterojunctions have been designed to enhance hydrogen evolution by transferring electrons to the metal component. In this study, a copper powder graphdiyne (Cu-GDY) composite catalyst with ohmic angle contact was synthesized by coupling copper foil with hexa-hexylbenzene.

Article Synopsis
  • - ALKBH7, a member of the α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase superfamily, shows varying expression across different cancers and has a significant correlation with patient prognosis, particularly in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC).
  • - The expression levels of ALKBH7 are linked to immune cell infiltration, tumor mutational burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI), homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), and DNA methylation, which may influence cancer treatment responses.
  • - In HNSC, reduced ALKBH7 was observed in tumor tissues, and laboratory experiments suggested its potential protective role against cancer cell migration, invasion, and proliferation, making it a candidate biom

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) is a midbrain nucleus composed of a preganglionic, cholinergic subpopulation and a densely clustered peptidergic subpopulation (EWcp). The EWcp is one of the few brain regions that show consistent induction of FOS following voluntary alcohol intake. Previous results in rodents point to urocortin 1 (UCN1) as one of the peptides most involved in the control of ethanol intake and preference.
