The effect of Hypecoum erectum L. extract on the morphofunctional condition of the liver in rats with experimental tetracycline-associated hepatitis was studied. The experiment included 40 albino rats Wistar. The animals treated with tetracycline hydrochloride (1.0 g/kg body weight) were exposed to the extract in a dose of 50 mg/kg for 5 days. On the 7th day of the experiment the following indices were determined: malonic dialdehyde concentration, catalase activity, the levels of ATP, pyruvate and lactate in the liver homogenate, as well as the blood levels of reduced glutathione. The liver pathomorphological investigation was applied. The H. erectum extract was shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation, to increase the activity of the host endogenous antioxidant system, to normalize the hepatocyte energy provision and to limit the liver degeneration.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Plants in the genus Hypericum (Hypericaceae), include more than 500 species worldwide, and many are valued for their medicinal properties, and are used as traditional herbal medicines. However, only H. perforatum is officially recognized as herbal drug in several pharmacopoeias, and used as an antidepressant clinically.

A new 1,3-benzodioxole derivative, identified as Hypecoumic acid (), was isolated, together with the three known compounds: protopine (), coptisine (), and cryptopine (). Their structures were identified based on extensive spectroscopic experiments, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectra (HR-ESI-MS), as well as comparison with those reported in the literature.

Four new prenylated phloroglucinol derivatives (+)-erectumol I (1a), (-)-erectumol I (1b), (-)-erectumol II (2a), and (+)-erectumol II (2b) were isolated from the methanol extracts of the whole plants of Hypericum erectum. These new compounds were isolated as a pair of enantiomers, respectively. The planar chemical structures and relative configurations of the new compounds were suggested by Cu-Kα X-ray diffraction analysis and been confirmed by high-resolution mass and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data.
