This study explored age-related changes in gesture to better understand the relationship between gesture and word retrieval from memory. The frequency of gestures during tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) states highlights this relationship. There is a lack of evidence describing the form and content of iconic gestures arising spontaneously in such TOT states and a parallel gap addressing age-related variations. In this study, TOT states were induced in 45 participants from 2 age groups (older and younger adults) using a pseudoword paradigm. The type and frequency of gestures produced was recorded during 2 experimental conditions (single-word retrieval and narrative task). We found that both groups experienced a high number of TOT states, during which they gestured. Iconic co-TOT gestures were more common than noniconic gestures. Although there was no age effect on the type of gestures produced, there was a significant, task-specific age difference in the amount of gesturing. That is, younger adults gestured more in the narrative task, whereas older adults generated more gestures in the single-word-retrieval task. Task-specific age differences suggest that there are age-related differences in terms of the cognitive operations involved in TOT gesture production.

The benzene tetraanion-bridged rare earth inverse arene amidinate complexes [{Ln(κ:η-Piso)}(μ-η:η-CH)] (2-Ln, Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Y; Piso = {(NDipp)C Bu}, Dipp = CH Pr-2,6) were prepared by the reduction of parent Ln(iii) bis-amidinate halide precursors [Ln(Piso)X] (Ln = Tb, Dy; X = Cl, I) or [Ln(Piso)I] (Ln = Gd, Y) with 3 eq. KC in benzene, or by the reaction of the homoleptic Ln(ii) complexes [Ln(Piso)] (Ln = Tb, Dy) with 2 eq. KC in benzene.

Background: In the dose titration of transdermal fentanyl to prevent unrelieved pain, it is important to consider not only dose adjustment, but also the titration period, which is influenced by the time required to reach the steady state. Many patients with cancer pain experience comorbidities that might affect the skin properties and influence transdermal absorption. We hypothesized that skin changes due to diabetes mellitus (DM) would affect the titration period of transdermal fentanyl.

Background: There are no clinical or laboratory markers that can diagnose acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) accurately. This study aimed to find differences in clinical and laboratory markers between arterial occlusive AMI and other acute abdominal diseases where AMI was initially suspected.
Methods: This was a post hoc study of an international prospective multicenter study where data on patients with suspected AMI were collected.

The optically trapped ensembles of atoms provide a versatile platform for storing and coherent manipulation of quantum information. However, efficient realization of quantum information processing requires long-lived quantum states protected from the decoherence e.g.

We developed an infographic intervention to augment HIV-related education in the Dominican Republic (DR), which demonstrated preliminary success in pilot studies. We then partnered with the United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) HIV Services and Systems Strengthening program in the DR to scale up the intervention. We used a two-tier Training-of-Trainer (TOT) method to teach intervention administration.
