Perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) is a promising candidate for high density magnetic recording and has already been applied to hard disk drive (HDD) systems. However, media noise still limits the recording density. To reduce the media noise and achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in hard disk media, the grains of the magnetic layer must be magnetically isolated from each other. This study examined whether sputter-deposited Co-Pt thin films can have adjacent grains that are physically isolated. To accomplish this, the effects of the sputtering conditions and wet etching process on magnetic properties and the microstructure of the films were investigated. The film structure was Co-Pt (30 nm)/Ru (30 nm)/NiFe (10 nm)/Ta (5 nm). The composition of the Co-Pt thin films was Co-30.7 at.% Pt. The Co-Pt thin films were deposited in Ar gas at 5, 10, 12.5, and 15 mTorr. Wet etching process was performed using 7% nitric acid solution at room temperature. These films had high out-of-plane coercivity of up to 7032 Oe, which is twice that of the as-deposited film. These results suggest that wet etched Co-Pt thin films have weaker exchange coupling and enhanced out-of-plane coercivity, which would reduce the medium noise.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent experiments demonstrated a significant increase in torques when a thin aluminum layer was added to a cobalt/platinum heterostructure, indicating a possible Rashba-like interaction at the Co/Al interface.
  • First-principles calculations revealed that this interaction leads to the emergence of a large helical orbital texture in the cobalt layer, driven by the orbital Rashba effect and the formation of surface states at the interface.
  • The study highlights that this orbital texture results in a nonequilibrium orbital accumulation, producing large current-induced torques and providing a theoretical foundation for using orbital transport phenomena in all-metallic magnetic systems with lighter elements.

Formation of functional thin films for nanoelectronics and magnetic data storage via thermally induced diffusion-driven structural phase transformations in multilayer stacks is a promising technology-relevant approach. Ferromagnetic thin films based on Co Pt alloys are considered as a material science platform for the development of various applications such as spin valves, spin orbit torque devices, and high-density data storage media. Here, we study diffusion processes in Pt-Co-based stacks with the focus on the effect of layers inversion (Pt/Co/substrate versus Co/Pt/substrate) and insertion of an intermediate Au layer on the structural transitions and magnetic properties.

We investigate the magnetic interlayer coupling and domain structure of ultra-thin ferromagnetic (FM) cobalt (Co) layers embedded between a graphene (G) layer and a platinum (Pt) layer on a silicon carbide (SiC) substrate (G/Co/Pt on SiC). Experimentally, a combination of x-ray photoemission electron microscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism has been carried out at the Co L-edge. Furthermore, structural and chemical properties of the system have been investigated using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Not only since the progressive reduction of structure sizes in modern micro- and nanotechnology, surface and interface effects have played an ever-increasing role and nowadays often dominate the behavior of entire systems. Therefore, understanding the nature of surface and interface effects and being able to fully control them is of fundamental importance, in particular in modern thin-film technology. In this study, it is revealed how Co/Pt multilayer-based synthetic antiferromagnets (SAFs) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the regime of dominating antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange can be employed to control the collective magnetic reversal via systematically altering surface and interface effects.

We report on the electronic and magnetic properties of superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures fabricated by electron beam evaporation on to unheated thermally oxidised Si substrates. Polycrystalline Nb thin films (5 to 50 nm thick) were shown to possess reliably high superconducting critical temperatures ([Formula: see text]), which correlate well with the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of the film. These properties improved during ex-situ annealing, resulting in [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]RRR increases of up 2.
