Aggregation of the protein alpha-synuclein has been identified in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and is initiated by the folding of the protein monomer into an amyloid form of insoluble fibrils. The neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine have been shown to both inhibit the formation of these fibrils and disaggregate existing fibrils, yielding the more toxic oligomeric form of α-synuclein. This study characterizes the stable oligomers formed through the aggregation and disaggregation processes in the presence of these catecholamines, and suggests differences in oligomer formation depending on the extent of oxidation of the neurotransmitter at the time of oligomerization. Unique oligomers are also stabilized, likely formed from the aggregation of monomeric α-synuclein and a proteolytic fragment of α-synuclein; however, proteolytic fragments do not form as readily in the presence of these neurotransmitters. These findings suggest novel pathways for the formation of α-synuclein oligomers in the presence of neurotransmitters, particularly oxidized forms.

The study explores the vital role of gut microbiota in regulating neurotransmitters and its subsequent effects on brain function and mental health. It aims to unravel the mechanisms by which microbial metabolites influence neurotransmitter synthesis and signaling. The ultimate goal is to identify potential therapeutic strategies targeting gut microbiota for the management and treatment of neurological disorders, such as depression, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), anxiety, and Parkinson's disease.

Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETS) are common intracranial tumors, but extrasellar or ectopic PitNETS are very rare and supposed to originate from some pituitary remnants. They are mostly found in sphenoidal sinus. But particularly, ectopic clival PitNETS are highly aggressive and can cause bone invasion and can be misdiagnosed as other lesions of the skull base such as chordomas.

Fiber photometry has become a popular technique to measure neural activity in vivo, but common analysis strategies can reduce the detection of effects because they condense signals into summary measures, and discard trial-level information by averaging . We propose a novel photometry statistical framework based on functional linear mixed modeling, which enables hypothesis testing of variable effects at , and uses trial-level signals without averaging. This makes it possible to compare the timing and magnitude of signals across conditions while accounting for between-animal differences.

Parkinson's disease (PD) represents a growing challenge to global health, as it involves millions of people. The high grade of disability is due to the loss of dopaminergic neuron activity, and levodopa is the gold-standard therapy used to restore dopamine in the dopamine-denervated regions. Another therapeutic approach is the use of A adenosine receptor antagonists and, among them, istradefylline is the only one currently approved for therapy in association with levodopa.

Background: A number of rodent studies have investigated the effects of alcohol (ethanol) administration on the catecholaminergic neurotransmitters, norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA). These studies suggest that presentation of alcohol to mice or rats can alter brain levels of NE and DA, in various subregions. Other studies have presented the hypothesis that there may be an unidentified pathway in rodents, and other organisms, that actually transforms ethanol to NE or DA.
