Backround And Aims: Early evaluation of cardiac remodeling may be useful in predicting heart failure in patients with arterial hypertension. The identification of biomarkers as useful clinical tools in this regard is ongoing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of selected cardiac biomarkers levels with parameters of cardiac structure and function in patients with arterial hypertension.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a condition characterized by the heart's inability to meet the body's demands, resulting in various complications. Two primary types of HF exist, namely HF with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and HF reduced with LVEF. The progression of HF involves compensatory mechanisms such as cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and alterations in gene expression.

Objective: To review the utility of galectin-3 (Gal-3) as a biomarker for postoperative adverse outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
Method: This review was conducted in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Electronic database search was conducted in October 2023.
Elevated filling pressure of the left ventricle (LV) defines diastolic dysfunction. The gold standard for diagnosis is represented by the measurement of LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) during cardiac catheterization, but it has the disadvantage of being an invasive procedure. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between LVEDP and cardiac serum biomarkers such as natriuretic peptides (mid-regional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide [MR-proANP], B-type natriuretic peptide [BNP], and N-terminal prohormone BNP [NT-proBNP]), soluble ST2 (sST2), galectin-3 and mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proAMD).

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a lectin associated with fibrosis and inflammation, and increased circulating concentrations are considered a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) in humans. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the serum concentration of Gal-3 in dogs with cardiac disease, both with and without AF. Dogs with AF associated with acquired heart diseases were selected, while cardiac healthy dogs and dogs with heart diseases but without AF served as controls.
